OT: another thing to do with scrap fabrics that you have no other use for

So, I made a dog bed foundation for Deanna's pad since it is against 2 outside walls and she can feel the cold. I had leftover fabric fromt hat, but no other use for it...same with some fleece from Ken's jacket......had a lightbulb moment...which is very rare, so bear with me.

When we redid the kitchen and dinind room, we put in all new cabinets. However, we were NOT going to remove the old plumbing to accurately cut the back of the sink base, so we ended up just cutting out a rather large rectangle to fit around them. Now, we also had a hole that went directly into the crawl space (unheated, dark, freaky to me). DH patched that as best as he could with scrap wood, but critters of the rodent kind could probably still get in if they wanted...not even going ot think about snakes and other things).

Ok, everything was fine and dandy until the weather got colder. The kitchen and dining room were noticeably chilly when we went in there, definitely more so near the sink (well, DUH!!!).

SO....I grabbed some of the fleece scraps, had a double layer that I stapled above the cut out and then sliced down so that it could go around the pipes. I whip-stitched the slices back together after all had been made and the fleece had been stapled all around the edges of the rectangular hole. Next up, the leftover duck, or is it twill>??? Anyway, I did that in a 4 layer piece, same way. Guess what??!!!???

There's no more draft and I used up most of the duck/twill that had no other use, as well as a bit of fleece....woooHooooooooooooo!!!

Now I also don't have to worry about opening the cabinet and finding wild critters ready to spring out at me....this is a win-win-win situation!!!

What a hoot!

Before I remodeled my kitchen, it was the same kind of deal. Had to leave the cabinet doors open in order to keep the pipes from freezing. Had heat tape all under the house, just the couple of feet from under the floor through the wall was the problem. Once everything was remodelled, lots of insulation was added to the walls! grin

Good thinking! grin

Good going! You do realize though that those sharp-toothed little critters will just adore that nice bedding material you put in their reach. Roberta in D

well Pbbbt!!

I wasn't thinking ab out that, but they can just deal with the dryer lint that I sometimes toss out for the birds to make nests with. Besides...if they nibble on it, it will decrease the air-blockage, and I will be able to tell
