OT - automatic email reply

Hello, Does anyone know how I can set up an automatic reply on my email? You know, the sort which say that you're away until such-and-such a date and you'll reply when you get back? I'm away next week, all day every day, at my friend Keiko's, so could use something like that.

I would not anyone let anyone know I was away if the home was going to be empty. When our son goes to sea he has his phone calls diverted to us. Could you do that also, but it is a risk to let people know the property is unoccupied. Trying to be helpful Shirley

If you really wanted, you could put your compie will be 'down' for the next week or so and you'll give us a shout when you're back up and running..

I think your internet provider probably has something like that in their email program. I have had it in mine with every one we have had. We never have our phone calls forwarded to another number when we are gone because we call home every night, and retrieve our messages, and delete them at that time.

What e-mail program do you use? IIRC, Outlook and Outlook Express have that option - otherwise, more than likely, you'll have to set it up through your e-mail provider (meaning, NOT using your e-mail program, but your provider's WEB mail settings).

I'd try Outlook Express - which is free from Microsoft. It would mean setting up your accounts (though, IIRC, you can "import" them from your existing mail program) in Outlook ...

If you need more explicit instructions, give me a holler - I've done THAT more than once! ;)

It's usually something you have to set up with your mail server, which for you looks like it's the same as your ISP (tesco).

If it were something that your could do from whatever you use to read email, you'd have to have a computer on, with the program open and not set to hibernate or anything if it were left unused. Sometimes, you input the information through your email program, but it will be sending info off the the server and not all servers run on the same thing, or accept the particular settings.

I'd suggest going to the website for your ISP and searching for terms such as "holiday message", or "vacation message". However I'll add the same caution as others, this is really something better kept away from home, it's a very useful thing to have it set up on a work email account, with details as who to talk to if it's urgent and so on.

This is one of those things that might seem like a great idea but don't forget, it will also automatically reply to all the spam you get which will confirm to them they have a live email addy. Doing the auto vacation reply may in the long run increase the amount of spam you get.
