OT: Can't believe this even happened...

and I think it will through a crimp into my RCTQ UAQW plans.

As some of you know, David owns the apartment building we currently live in. Half of the basement is a common area with laundry room and some storage units for the tenants and the other half is devoted to my sewing/quilting/crafting/stamping activities. I went downstairs this morning before work to grab something out of the sewing area and felt immediately that something was wrong. Took me a few minutes to realize that somethings were missing--stereo and brand new iMac. Some other small things too, but wouldn't you know they left the TV and the speakers that matched the stereo?!!

David also discovered that they'd broken into the coin box of one of the washers (literally hacked their way through all the sheet metal) too and then stuffed some old clothes or rags into the hole they made in an attempt to hide it. It worked too, because Katie Mae the cat insisted on being let inside through the basement last night when I got home from work and I walked right past that washer without thinking a thing about it. Katie Mae made a beeline for the sewing area but since the lights were off and I was still feeling under the whether due to the galloping crud I've got I didn't even glance that way.

I'm feeling really upset about this, it looks like they dumped some stuff around to find a bag to carry the loot away. I hate the thought of someone going through my stuff. I hate loosing my pretty iMac that had all of my financial info, all my quilt designs, all my embroidery patterns, bunches of knitting patterns, etc. (in a way its like half my life is gone) on it, plus my new EQ6 which I was planning to play with during the annual RCTQ quilting week. I can't even install EQ6 on my laptop because that has VPC with Windows2000 on it, and I need Windows XP.

The neighborhood police officer came this morning and filled out a report, and dusted for prints. I'm waiting to hear from the insurance company, hopefully at least the iMac can be replaced with insurance money, but I doubt most of what was on it can be recreated. The officer was really nice and managed to get a palm print off the washer. He said he'd turn it over to the dective bureau. It sounds like they'll be back this evening maybe to talk to the other folks who live in the building.

We have an idea who might be behind this, because the doors were locked, so the theives had to have acess to a key. That upsets me even more, because it's likely a pal of someone we know and like. Currently, half the apartments are empty because we only rent to people who are recommended to us, so everyone in the building is like family.

Meanwhile, David is going to have to see about getting all the locks replaced and the washer repaired. It doesn't even just affect us, but everyone who lives in the building.

What a horrible thing! Be sure to notify your bank -- especially if you had bill-pay set up and had passwords stored. If they get into your banking records -- could make a bad thing worse...

I am sorry to hear about your break-in. I know from experience it is really invasive personally. Good karma to you and bad karma to the thief.

Not sure we'll manage the quick resolution. Fortunately I have today off, so maybe I can start reconstructing some of the records.
