Kippers:
To right! I've got lots of it, so I should know... And in my present work I use very little of what I'm actually qualified to do! :D
On the other hand, it's never too late and it's never wasted.
(That said, I'm in school tomorrow and most of next week, having suffered a relapse and heading back to the classroom! Mini Christmas stockings with the kids: herd of sewing machines headed out to school in the morning!)
Sunny, we've been hoping that you would get a good report today that perhaps your car hasn't been totalled. Hoping, hoping that perhaps some creative beating and banging could get it going again . . . I probably watch Nascar too much. Have you gotten any sort of news from the dealer? hugs, Polly
Okies, Kate.... I think I'll pass on the kippers, grilled or boiled. ;- ) However, that website made my mouth drool. Have any of you ever eaten Scottish Tablet? It looks and sounds yummy. ..... Gotta google me a recipe.
Sunny no longer waiting for dh with wet kipper in hand
Here's the straight scoop:
Car has a badly bent front wheel. It's bent back up into the engine compartment. Obviously the damned thing is made of Play Doh r ather than any kind of traditional car materials.
So, it will be about a week before the entire insurance process can be completed and allow the repairs to go forward, another week to 10 days. And having stupidly tried to save a few dollars by not putting car rental on my insurance, we will have to r ent a car for all that time to the tune of $250 a week. Probably three weeks. With a $500 deductible on the car. All told, there exactly goes the $1000 I had stuck back to pop into our checking account to keep us from scraping so dangerously low each month. Hmmmmmm, now how did the danged universe know how much money I had and manage to make me spend it????

Sunny - I am so sorry you are going through all this. I hope things start to look up soon.

Prayers and good thoughts on the way, Sunny!
I have one! Naturally... Looooong time since I made it, but yes, it IS yummy. I used to make it every summer with my granny, and she used always to send some down to us for Christmas as well.
I'll try and remember to dig the recipe out for you tomorrow. remind me...
While you are sending that recipe, Kate, would you see if you have a herring recipe too, please? I love herring, but always just buy the canned stuff, unless I am lucky enough to find some good herring salad!
MSM ALWAYS had some for New Year's Eve and Day .... to bring good luck in the new year. I do not know from what culture that tradition springs. Could it be a Scot's tradition? In any case, I carry on this tradition, for Auld Lang Syne.

Howdy!
I've only heard of the herring-for-luck idea once before, Pat. This story says it's an American thing (figures):
This one says the herring is a German idea; no mention whether it's red:
We have black-eyed peas, usually w/ jalapeños, and cornbread, on NYD. And I quilt. Want to be sure I'll be quilting for the rest of the year. (One year I quilted every day; could'a been the b-e peas. )
Anyway, you can have my portion of the herring; enough fishy stuff going on around here already. ;-D
R/Sandy -- who has found 2 delicious German markets > While you are sending that recipe, Kate, would you see
Never heard of it in Scotland. The Swedish tradition of lutefisk has a similar meaning, though. Maybe somebody decided to adapt it to something edible in a part of the world where lutefisk was mercifully unavailable.

Hey! I LOVE lutefisk. I was sorry when mom quit making it every New Year's Day. Sometimes we got it during the rest of the year, too, as a special treat. I still remember calling the allspice that we sprinkled on the lutefisk "dentist office". I guess when we were kids there was something allspice-y we encountered at the dentist office???

Could be Norwegian -- I remember my DGM (born & raised in Norway) bringing home the "board" (i.e. dried fish) wrapped in paper, and having it soak in the basement in a tub for days.... The rest of the family loved it, but I always needed to douse it with lemon juice to add flavor.
