OT Cat drugs

This just occured to me this morning.

Our Jiji-chan had an allergic reaction to a new cat litter. He scratched his back end up pretty badly. The vet gave him a cortisone shot to help with the itching, and gave us some antibiotics for him so his raw parts wouldn't get infected.

The antibiotics are a liquid, which we just squirt down his throat with a dropper. Lots easier than pills!

So the thing is, who's idea was it to make vet antibiotics banana flavored?

Jiji keeps giving us this look that just screams "Dammit! I'm a Cat not a monkey! Bring me fish!"

Isn't medicine supposed to taste nasty so you know it's serious? Roberta in D

We had to 'pill' a big sweet Tom cat for many years. Part of the drill was that he also needed a spoon of buttermilk and also some minced apple. He was mostly cooperative about his treatment but banana? I don't know about banana. You just may be in big trouble. Polly

You think like me. I've already pondered this the last time Bosley was on antibiotic. It's too bad we're quilters and not pharmaceutical chemists. We could market "Amoxcillin in a Mouse-Flavored Suspension" and make millions.

I had the same problem. If your cat absolutely won't take it, ask the vet to recommend a compounding pharmacy who will put the antibiotic in a fish-flavored paste or petroleum jelly. If p. jelly, a little anchovy paste might make it more acceptable. That ought to work. Most cats will take that, or if they don't like it, if you wipe it on their paws, they will lick it off.

You outta see the looks you get when it's bubble gum flavored!

I actually asked my vet. The truth is that the vet meds are usually human (often child) meds given in very tiny doses according to your pet's weight.

The liquid drugs are quite easy to give, especially if your oral syringe has an extension tube. We just lift the lip on one side of the mouth and slide the tube between two teeth and squirt. We love liquids because there are no worries that Cleo will selectively hork up the pill half an hour later. Debra in VA See my quilts at

years ago we discovered that liquid meds go into cats very easily when mixed into a bit of cat-milk. Just have to lock the cat to be medicated away from the others. No problems at all getting the meds into the cat, no scratches or trauma to either cat or people.

Ours can smell the medicine and refuse to drink anything with a medicine smell. They won't even drink their beloved tuna juice when it has meds in it. Debra in VA See my quilts at

I just took a Sharpie and put a little smiley little fish face on the one banana in the kitchen, even drew scales on it.....Mr. Oliver was neither interested nor amused.....cats are like that. *sigh*

Hey they are sharp! Jiji-chan is addicted to laser pointers, and we have worn out the batteries in several so he can chase the dot. Today DH brought home a laser level from Big Lots.(1) Jiji found it in the bag, pulled it out and was dancing and meowing all around it. It doesn't look anything like a laser pointer, so I can only assume that when he found it in the bag the darn cat read the word 'laser' on the package!

It was kind of neat seeing him spread his front paws wide to try and catch the whole line. (G)

NightMist (1)check your local store. Ths was a Black and Decker for $7, and I am so using the thing for quilts!

I remember that years ago the roundworm medication I used to get for the cats smelt of banana. And my (many) cats all loved it, they took their medicine gladly. And licked the dropper clean. None of them would touch a real banana with a ten-foot pole, but the artificial flavor was a different kettle of.......something.

Is this a flavor that some cats love and some cats dislike? Now I am curious.
