OT cold turkey -- anticipating withdrawal symptoms

I just made an offer on a new house and it was accepted and I will be moving sometime at the end of October or early November. Exactly when depends on some work that needs to be done on the house *after* the seller moves out but *before* I can move in. Because of the uncertainty, I need to have the majority of my stuff packed by the end of the month, but won't know just when it can be *un*packed again.

Take into consideration that I just went back to college full time and have classes M, W, and F from 8 am to 5 most days and until 8 some days. Needless to say, the SM, the stash and most ongoing projects are going to be stuck in boxes for a while.

There is a Grandmother's Flower Garden that I started hand piecing (with quilt patties) a couple of years ago when DH was in the hospital a couple of times. I hope that will be enough to ward off the shakes and general DTs that I have heard come with sewing/quilting withdrawal.

Once I have moved into the new house I will send out a call for a stash raid and y'all can come help me find it among all the boxes ;-)

p.s. -- Patti S in Seattle -- the new house has a yard and garden, wheeeee! (and no blackberries that I can detect.)

Keep the Grandmother's Flower Garden with you at all times. When you feel the tremors coming on, pull something out and sew immediately. If this doesn't help the trembling, take 2 credit cards, get in the car and head to your LQS, breaking the sound barrier to get there. Begin fondling, oooohing and ahhhhing the fabric. Find something to purchase, preferably something you just have to have, with no immediate plans for it's future. The shaking should subside. Add a couple of FQ's. some thread, a couple packages of new needles for your SM, and you will suddenly feel like your old self again, all withdrawal symptoms gone. Just to be sure, stop on the way home for chocolate, and perhaps a bottle of good, red wine. Keep your "new" stash at your side. If tremors begin again, repeat above process as often as needed.

Your house sounds lovely. Shall I be thinking about a trip to CA next spring for some spring planting and gardening? When is spring break again??? Congratulations! Wishing you the best of everything on your new home.

OK, I've printed off your instructions to be sure I don't miss a step :-) Sounds like it should work.

Congratulations on the new house, Anne! And good luck in getting into it as soon as possible so that your withdrawal doesn't have to go on for too long. Good luck with the classes, too!

Congratulations Anne! It's so hard but so rewarding to move into new surroundings. Coupled with going to school... wow. I have issues keeping up with two classes, and one of those is online!

I'll come help you pack the stash. Ask Mz Fluuterby - I did hers for her move from Bsplat ;)) Now, I have practice, and I can fake a real innocent look if something finds its way home with me, and you cannot find it in your stash boxes when you do finally unpack.

Congratulations on the house!

If the withdrawal symptoms get too severe try a little vicarious quilting here on rctq. It might help.

That scares me, Anne. I think you'd better anticipate the likelihood that everything will take longer than anybody says. If I were you, I would reserve an emergency kit just in case. Could you pretend that you were getting things together to go to a sewing retreat, holding out your SM, cutting mat, scissors, etc. - just whatever you would need for a happy weekend quilting with friends. Don't let this emergency kit get buried under or shipped away. If need be, shove something of no importance like the refrigerator out in the garage to make room for your needed quilting fix. Then, if the plumber or the mortgage company or goblins drag around on you, at least you'll have your quilting to soothe your ruffled feathers. Polly

Congrats on the new house! As for the withdrawal symptoms......you can always take a few minutes to chat or read here and get a fix. LOL!!! Have fun moving. It's something I have always dreaded. Not the move itself, but the packing and unpacking. The main reason I stay in this old trailer house is because I just can't face moving again, LOL.

What is "quilt pattie"? I hope it's not too obvious, do I don't embarrass myself! Congrats on the new house Anne. The best thing I know about moving is the getting rid of all the stuff I just can't part with, cause there's no real reason to keep it. Try to do that before the move.

Oh my, how generous of you to offer. I couldn't possibly impose on you though. And, of course, my measly little itsy witsy bitsy stash wouldn't be worth all your trouble to drive up here. Oh, no, no, I couldn't possibly let you put yourself out. (whew, do you think she bought that?)

Oh I plan to, much as I can. And EQ5 is on my laptop now so even when the "big" computer is packed, the little one will be there.

Good plan Polly. That is practically what my Featherweight was invented for, right? I'll pretend that I am camping out ...

Best laid plans of mice and men ...

I told DH when we moved here from MA that he'd better pick out a house he really liked because I wasn't moving again! Now that the D has morphed into a #$@^&*, here I am moving ... but its all good. The new house is much more to *my* taste.

NAYY I did spell it wrong though. It is a Quilt Pati, not a Pattie. That's for hamburgers and such, LOL

I've been assigning myself two boxes a day, minimum, to pack. Today I went through my closet for summer clothes and packed two boxes as well as got two grocery bags ready for the clothing drive ... Weeding in the house is more fun than weeding in the garden ...

I agree. Lots of new quilts will be needed to make it into *my* space :-)
