OT - DDs race weekend

We all are headed down/up (can never figure it out) to our country home track of Bairnsdale for their Open race meet.

Wish the girls luck and think of them on Sunday - that's Saturday your time for most of you!!! They'll be racing hard against probably 20 other midgets (7-11 year olds) and are both aiming for a top 10 finish.

I know I have the karts set up right, I just need their heads to be in the right frame of mind. So please, any and all encouraging thoughts are more than welcome.

Both DH and I also have double duty on the weekend - pit crew for the girls and Grid Marshalls /Commentaters for the club.

We head off about 7am tomorrow to get in some practice. I'll let y'all know when we get home how the girls went.

Guess what????? Oh what a wonderful weekend!!!

The girls did great - they both beat their best times on the Saturday in practice and dropped a couple of scorchers in which we were really pleased with.

On Sunday it was disappoiinting not to see as many midgets as we thought - only 12 but the weather forecast would have put quite a few off. Supposed to be windy and heaps of rain but instead we got glorious sunshine, although a tad cold which played havoc with the engines (they didn't "warm up" as fast as they should.

DD2 had a bad first heat - her sprocket shifted causing the chain to come off in the last lap which meant the kart wouldn't go. She came back in both the second heat and final, driving really well although about 1 second off her best (the colder weather would have caused that). Because of the points system used she finished up 11/12 but we are very proud of her efforts and determination.

DD1 on the other hand had an ideal weekend. Little miss consistency. Driving hard and doing all the things we told her she was rewarded with EQUAL THIRD!!!!! In an open!!!! She beat the state champ (okay so he DNFd in the final but she still beat him overall!). We had her pegged for fourth so when she got called up it was a wonderful surprise to hear her get equal third.

I am soo proud of both my girls. And thanks to y'all for the good thoughts you sent out, I'm sure the girls mut have got the good vibes from you.

That's great, Sharon. Well done all of you. (It is a team sport really). Even Michael Schumacher had mechanical trouble occasionally - despite the best mechanics >g< The excitement comes right through your message. It's such fun to feel involved. Thank you. . In message , sharonoz writes

I'm glad you enjoy the posts. It just give me such a kick to see the girls enjoying this sport. It teaches them so much - responsibility, determination, endurance, competitiveness, judgement, etc, etc, etc. But most of all they've (and we've) made some wonderful friends.

And yes, it was pit crew error for DD2's first heat. We'd changed her sprocket and chain over on the saturday afternoon and I asked DH to tighten up the engine. Unfortunately he didn't tighten the sprocket carrier and the rest is....history. As Grid Marshall and official commentator he took full blame (and announced it too!) which was a pretty gutsy move. Mind you DD2 whacked him good when she got back to the pits!

What fun! So glad your DDs did well and everyone had a wonderful time.

My DD started racing again, too. First race was two weeks ago and the car had electrical problems, which DD and DH found and fixed during the week. She then raced this past Saturday and she came in 4th out of 7. The car handled really well BUT this was at the same track she was injured (burned) at last year - and she said she was very anxious during the heat (first race). She had calmed down during the feature, and then ran very well. The gearing on the car needs a little tweaking, so she was running on the slow slide, but she and DH will work on this week. There are two races this weekend, so gotta get busy on it LOL =20

Gotta hand it to her - she didn't let last year's injury put her off racing altogether, and 'got back in the saddle' without hesitation or doubt. Our racing girls are tough babes, aren't they! :)

Wonderful! Her Dad's action there will have taught her more about fair play than most things. . In message , Sharon Harper writes

They sure are. Give your DD a hug for me and tell her I'm so very proud. DD1 whacked into DD2 during practice on Saturday and bent up the front of her chassis - nothing that a bit of brute force and some $$ couldn't fix though!
