OT: DeAnna

Well, she had stopped eating the chicken-rice mixture, and I was getting worried again. The vets office called (the nurse that helped when we took DeAnna in last week) to check on her and I gave her the update - she said she'd have one of the docs call me back. Dr. Vaughn called back a couple of hours later and we went over everything that was going on. She again suggested that we try baby food - any with turkey, chicken, beef, but preferably not with tomatoes in them because we didn't want to deal with potential reactions. If she didn't start eating with that, then they want us to bring her in for IV fluids and such. Of course, that is getting into the really expensive zone (hard to make decisions like this, but we always have to put our biological 2-legged children before the 4-legged ones), and hubby said he couldn't do that. So, last night, after DSs karate class, we went to Target on the way to Michael's. I bought 8 different jars of baby food to try with DeAnna.

The first was beef stew, which I let her sniff first - she tried to eat the lid!! I spooned it into her dish and mixed it with the rice. She ate nearly everything!! We have to give her antibiotics and she kept spitting it out last night - until I stuffed it into a chicken stick (Gerber's kid-friendly version of vienna sausages). She gulped it right down, despite having one of the cats in her face trying to get at it....lol.

So....she is getting a baby food chicken-rice mixture in the morning and a little bit at night along with 2 of the chichen or turkey stick, one of which has her antibiotic stuffed into it.

With luck, she will progress to the more chunky baby foods in a week or so....not sure what I'm going to do with the 40 lb bag of Beneful that I have in the garage, but at least she's eating something!!

P.S. I was notified last night that I have an upcoming sewing job thanks to the friend that is doing my business work for me (flyers, logos, etc.) and a couple of future ones that are in the discussion stage....woohoo!!

Larisa, i'm glad to see DeAnna is doing better. The Beneful will keep. if you've already opend the bag, just fold over the opening and staple it shut. or if you have a really big container, put it in there. it will keep fresh either way. hugs to DeAnna.

We just had to treat 2 dogs (and 3 horses) for Lymes. They were all on doxycycline (65 pills 2x per day for the Percheron). Anyway, many antibiotics will cause an upset stomach and decrease appetite. So part of her lack of appetite may be related to the meds.

I store my extra dog food in my garage at this time of year. Freezing (dry) dog and cat food keeps it fresh. Inside the house I have huge plastic wastebaskets with lids and I empty the food into those- labeled dog food, puppy food and cat food. Sadly, my Buttercup kitty has gone to Rainbow Bridge so I donated the leftover cat food to our animal shelter. And Hoover is a big boy now, so I don't keep puppy food any longer. Missy gets special soft food, so the puppy food bin has been re-labeled for her.

Larisa, I'm so glad DeAnna is doing better- when you started that last message I was braced for the worst. Whew!!! Keep up the good work and the baby food and the loving attention. My darling Missy girl has been surviving on love- with terminal cancer- for many, many months now- it's amazing how they will pull thru and keep going on that alone. She was given a month to live on 6/22/06- the day my brother died.
