OT - Dishwasher shopping

Kim in NJ

Yep, we bought a dishwasher a couple of years ago, and we also checked Consumer Reports beforehand. We were appalled at the long wash times listed. However, I think some of the times in the report also included the drying cycle, which we never use. We just open the door when it's finished, let out the steam, and then leave it a bit open until things are dry. It takes longer to run than our old one, but we don't babysit it, so it's not a problem for us.

It's a GE and it washes the dishes pretty well.

I heard that many brand-name dishwasher detergents aren't working as well as they used to now that phosphates can't be used. IIRC, "Finish" was a phosphate-free brand that worked (info from Consumers Reports again).

Our Maytag dishwasher broke a couple months ago, and we are still trying to decide whether to replace it or not. So, this topic is rather apropos to us.

We recently bought an LG and like it.

As you've discovered cycle times are much longer than those of us with

35 year old machines are used to!

One thing to look at when you are shopping - the silverware basket.

We discovered that many machines do not have a spot for larger things - serving spoons, spatulas, rubber scrapers, etc. The baskets only accommodate small silverware.

Take a knife and something else (spoon or fork) with you. We found that many brands had slots so small that only basic silverware would fit - those chunky styles or round handles would not fit.

Howdy!

We've had a Bosch dw for years; quiet, efficient, and I'll get another of the same next time (but it won't be from Sears, who refuses to service them). Bosch was no more expensive than any other good brand.

Cheers!
