I'm delighted to hear that your surgery was successful, Pat! :) You're doing well, it seems, if you can already type!
If you enjoy Preston/Child--and I definitely do--you might also enjoy books by James Rollins. Very interesting, thrilling, and somewhat scary. However, do not read Subterranean as your first venture. It was a little different from his others in that it was very, very dark. I would recommend Amazonia, Deep Fathom, or Ice Hunt.
Oh and another who writes in a somewhat similar vein, is F. Paul Wilson. I'm really hooked on his Repairman Jack line of books. (I hesitate to call it a series, because you can read the books out of order and miss very little of the backstory.)
