knitting in color, need a good book

A friend out of our area asked me what is a good book to get to learn how to knit in color, 3 or more colors. I was lucky and had a close relative that knitted many items in several or more colors

I have not seen any that show how to carry the yarn in the back and etc.

Any good recommendations please.

Thank you Wooly,

Yes to both Wooly. I have not seen any books as I said on how to carry the yarn in the back. I usually fasten the yarn every 6th or 7th stitch. I tried to explain it but was little help.

Thanks for the fast resp> Like what, Fair Isle? Is your friend looking for technique or for > charts? >

_Mary Thomas's Knitting Book_ (Dover books, originally 1938) has some good drawings on pages 96-100 or so of how to carry yarn with two colors. To carry more than two colors in the same row, you do the same, but it will be thicker because of the extra yarn. I've carried as many as four colors in very thin cotton (number 8 perle cotton) and the techniques are the same as for two.

If you want advice on color combinations, Ann Feitelson's book _The Art of Fair Isle knitting_ has color advice. Just beware of her technique drawings, because whoever did them made quite a few mistakes.

Thank you Mirjum,

I thank the book Tamar mentioned will be good. It is hard to pass info over phone and they do not have a computer. I was taught years ago.

Second this recommendation.

This one also with the same caution.

Others include:

Anna Zilboorg, all of her books include instructions for working with

2-4 colors in the techniques section, following which are the charts and project patterns.

Lizbeth Upitis, who designs fabulous colorwork sweaters based on old East European weaving drafts. How-to for colorwork plus a basic sweater formula and some patterns that will make your eyes cross :D

Charlene Schurch, colorwork caps, mittens and socks

Philosophers Wool put out a colorwork tutorial booklet several years ago, it should be available through the website though I haven't looked so don't hold me to that.

Wooly,

My friend picked up "Nanette Blanchard's, Stranded Color Knitting". She seem to like it. You can find it at "lulu.com." . It seems like a good book. I will then in two weeks and get to see it.
