OT Help

This morning when I checked my email......I'm getting hundreds of "returned mail" DAEMON messages!!! Of course I didn't send any of these messages. I've checked my virus updates and have scanned with no problems there that I can determine. What's up????

It means a spammer has got hold of your address and is using it as the sender in the "From:" line of their junk.

Usually this happens when your address was known to somebody using Outlook Express (or some other Microsoft program) and their system got hit by a virus that turned it into a "zombie" machine carrying out the spammer's orders.

Can you work out which of your friends might have been involved?

It's another form of phishing. Don't answer any of them, as they're spam hoping to get a reply from you. Obnoxious, isn't it? :(

I don't see any way to see if it came from a familiar source. I'm on hold with my ISP to make sure I'm not pegged as the spammer. I can see the "name" of the real sender. It's a scam " microsoft promotion" and something about willing a million pounds. heck! I'm trying to get rid of the pounds I already have! :-)

DH & I had that happen to us one time. Our computer guy came out, and said it was a phishing scam, and just delete them all and not open them. He said it is fairly common. He said it goes in spurts. He will see lots of it, then go several months, and never see it again.

This has been happening to me too lately - I just delete them.

Ok....I'll just wait for them to die off. I was concerned that perhaps my ISP might think I was the spammer and shut me down. But I suppose they see this a lot.

I expect this is a dumb question but can't you just hit the messages with a Block Sender? I know reverse and detonate would be much more satisfying but Block Sender makes me almost as happy as the mute button for the tv when Andy starts gasping and yelling about how I need to buy something NOW. Most of these are from mail return services . (MAILER-DAEMON) Some are sent back from legitimate (perhaps) recipients. Some have even provided the requested information for collecting the money. Most are Indian. Very odd. It seems to be dying out this afternoon, so I hope this was just a one time incident. I hope.

Happened to me a few years ago. My account was hijacked by a spammer ( I accidentally used my real e-mail addy in a message on a newsgroup). I changed my e-mail addy immediately. The way my ISP works, I am unable to delete my main account, but have up to 7 accounts available. I have checked the old account every now and then to find that the return mailers took about 4 months to stop, but my account became total spam. Good luck
