OT: I'm not quilting....

...and I'm *really* unhappy about it! I have several projects waiting for me, and I'm itching to get to them, but it's impossible to do anything for very long right now. Why? Because a woman who had taken in a stray puppy (about 4 months old at the time) died suddenly after about a month of keeping the pup. Her DD couldn't keep him, so he spent only one day with her before going to my DD and DSIL for a day. From there, he was going to end up at the pound if no one adopted him.

I didn't want another big dog! But this one looks like he could be Dexter's son (he isn't!). DJ (the puppy) is now about 5-6 months old and is part chow and probably part lab and/or spaniel. The vet says he's going to be about 50 lbs. when he's finished growing. Did I mention that I didn't want another big dog? I wanted another cocker! But DH says that when our lovable Dexter, who is almost 12 now, is gone we'll get a cocker for me.

Meanwhile, I'm sure you've guessed why I'm not quilting. :S I'm spending all day teaching the puppy that going outdoors to relieve himself is much more fun -- even in the rain -- than doing it indoors. Oh, and it's not a good idea to chew on the furniture or walls. And Dexter needs reassurance that I still love him.

I do have to say that DJ is really cute! ;) I'll post photos as soon as I can get him to sit still when he's not hibernating in a corner.

(((((Sandy, Dexter & DJ))))) Sometimes a pet comes into our lives, not because we need them, but because they need us more! I'll betcha that once he learns "out-to-go" and just how much you care about him, he'll turn into the love of your furry life (next to Dexter, of course ). We adopted a rescue dog, Gus, a couple of years ago - he's become a "velcro" dawg! Has his very own quilt, too! Give him a little time - there's a reason he found you! ME-Judy

The best dog we ever had fell into a dry well in our front yard one night when she was about the size of a house slipper. We fished her out, hugged her all night and took her "home" across the street the next morning. Several weeks later she fell into the dry well again. Same thing. She kept "falling" into our lives in one way or another. Finally when she was about 4 months old she ended up in our backyard. The man came to get her and said "she's going straight to the pound." Well, Sadie never left the backyard. And she became the love of our lives. And about two years later saved my son, who was just past 2 at the time, from drowning. He was blue and silent by the t ime she dragged me to him. He would have been gone forever without Sadie to run into the house, biting me, screaming at me, dragging me by the jeans leg to him. She lived to be 14. The day she left us we all four -- including my big sons and my husband -- circled our arms around each other in a huge family hug and cried for all we were worth. You are lucky to get this puppy. When a dog comes to us this way (rather than being tracked down adn chosen by us) I believe it's an angel in a fuzzy robe.

hugs to you and the fuzzfaces, Sunny

Sunny, what a beautiful story! Thanks for sharing it. I've loved all of the dogs I've ever had, and I know I'll love DJ, too. I just wasn't quite expecting a puppy just yet.

I'm sure we'll all love each other, Judy! I adore dogs and would have lots and lots if I could. So far, the love of my life has been Tuppence -- which is why I want another cocker. :)

Okay, I've finally managed a couple of photos of DJ. He's a typical puppy, so the first several were simply black blurs. But I've made him his own web page, and you can see him at . Cute, isn't he?

Sandy-

You are earning your "angel wings" by sharing your heart and home with this puppy. Bless you for your generous and loving heart.

I think you're going to have some good fun with this little chap. As you say, his start has been not too good; but he'll soon find that he has landed on his paws with you! And, maybe, it was best that he was unplanned? How marvellous to make him a web page! His tail might mature to feathers? And, if Dexter likes him, that is a bonus. Is DH all set to look after him while you're in Houston? Got all the accessories necessary!

Have fun. His temperament must be good if he can still like people after all he's been through. . In message , Sandy Foster writes

OOOO -- he's such a handsome lad! Makes me REALLY miss old Suzi (the run away from home, go walkabout and get lost) Dog! I have been meaning to post that I have a new GranDOGhter myself! Her name is Aspen (which is quickly becoming Aspirin -- LOL) and she is a rescue. She is about 2 y.o. and is a recent mom. Aspen has also been abused and was found on the streets with her puppies. The vet thinks she is a Shepherd/Lab mix but I doubt that Lab part. She has **really** short hair, more like a boxer or bull dog might have. She's also not a big dog and is only about an inch or two taller than DD's coffee table. She does have the Sshepherd coloring on her face and those tall ears. Best part, Aspen already thinks that Raechel (the SMDGD) is her best buddy in the whole world and they run around playing all the time. Of course, this does tend to bother Gizmo, my first GranDOGhter, who is now an official "old lady dog". Aspen also likes to pester Gizmo and this makes Gizzy want to play and that's good :-). DD has sent me some photos so as soon as I finish here I will get them posted to the Webshots Family album . If you're interested go have a look see at the new doggie. CiaoMeow >^;;^<

You mean, as soon as the little puncture wounds from his playful nipping heal? I'm exaggerating, of course, but we are having to work on not biting, since he thinks it's a game. Pure puppy.

Perhaps. Though right before I leave for Houston isn't the best timing, since DH is so rarely home to work with DJ.

I'm really hoping that the tail will develop feathers like Dexter's. It has a few wispy short ones, but I'm afraid that they may never get any fuller.

I hope so! But we also need to get back to the vet to get some shots and schedule a neutering. The sooner the better, of course.

He's really trying to please; it's just that he's still a puppy and can't control himself all the time as an adult can. He's been sleeping with me so I'll know if/when he has to go out in the middle of the night. ;)

"Big" being the operative word here. ;)

Oh good! Because I suspect you won't have a choice -- he's not the type to let someone come over and *not* introduce himself. How are you with "exuberant"? ;)

He is, isn't he? Especially when he's sleeping. ;)

You know, he looks like he's got a good bit of lab in him. They're great dogs....but a bit slow to mature. Patience is the key.

new, i was lurking a bit and wondered if you might be able to suggest a guilt beginning project; i need to use photos for memory keepsake and have never quilted b4; so can you list the basics; how time consuming is this, expense, and does there have to be alot of stitching....

your response would be most appreciated.

thankyou, ss
