Yay! I'm quilting!

Well - piecing, but that's getting there, right??? I've always been a fan of Bonnie Hunter's quiltville.com and often go there just to see what's new and feel inspired. Course I've always been a fan of scrap quilts, and I'd say "Yep, someday". Well, some months ago Bonnie started a mystery quilt and a chat group to go with it. I found it just as most of the group was finishing up their first mystery. It was fun to read the chatter and see the different pics that people posted of the same pattern, using their own scraps and colors. The second mystery started a couple of months ago, and I found myself rootling thru fabrics thinking if I DID do this mystery I could use..... pretty soon I found myself cutting strips, piecing strips, cutting those into units, sewing those...... you get the idea!

Well, I'm still lagging behind the group but not actually by too much. It's amazing what can happen with just 10 minutes here and half an hour there! My sewing room and living room are a disaster, but I'm getting in some me time doing something I love, and I'm seeing progress.

Unfortunately for my quilting, my DS and his wife and 2 little ones are coming to stay on Thurs, so I have to pick up my mess. I'm hoping to get things done in a way that I can just pull it back out once they are gone again.

This will probably end up being another top that sits and waits for quilting, as I can't see a space in the near future where I will be able to layer and quilt. Queen size quilts take up some space around your machine as you work! I know I could send it out to be quilted. I have a good friend with a longarm, - but I don't feel that the quilts are really mine when someone else quilts them. My own little quirk, I know.

It's so nice to be able to report in that I'm quilting!!!!

Hey, great news! GO GIRL!!! But, DO take the time to enjoy being with your family.... the quilt can wait a bit - and likely you'll "attack" it with renewed energy after they've left. Happy Mothers' Day! .... and happy quilting - er, piecing!

Marilyn, I wonder if I could get you to rethink something. You said " I know I could send it out to be quilted. I have a good friend with a longarm, - but I don't feel that the quilts are really mine when someone else quilts them." It is with great joy (and relief) that I share my quilts with someone else's help. There's simply nothing wrong with adding to the love and skill you put into a quilt with another quilter to quilt it. I'm delighted to label my 'big' quilts with the name of the dear friend who joins with her own talent. DD#1 's second whole sentence was "Do it myself". (Her first sentence was "Get it our of your mouth" but that's another story). Unless you grow your own cotton (first you'd have to create the seed), you're not doing a quilt by yourself. You're joining in a creation with generations before. Let your good friend join you. Just something to ponder. Polly

Howdy!

This brings to mind a quilt hanging in our guild show this weekend. A gorgeous whole-cloth quilt, the base cut of dark blue or maybe it was black fabric, the exquisite machine quilting done in a rainbow of thread colors. Really unique. Won a judge's choice prize. And I wondered, will the "maker" give the prize to the quilter? Because the maker, one woman, didn't piece or appliqué or embroider or do anything else to that fabric besides give it to the quilter who worked her magic on it. Okay, maybe "Maker" put on the binding; someone speculated that "Maybe she thought of the quilting designs..." but all agreed, the Quilter made that quilt a winner. Yet, the Maker got the prize because she entered it into the show. As Robert Plant sang, "ooo..it makes me wonder...."

As for hiring a quilter: great idea! Some of my best quilting has been done on quilts sent to me by friends & other clients. ;-) You benefit most, a Finished quilt to call your own.

I, too, LOVE "Quiltville". Did you know Bonie has a book coming out? I'm so excited about that because I LOVE her patterns, don't you? I saw that she'd started a mystery but didn't get involved (tho I LOVE to do mysteries & have done tons thru Quilts of Valor). How far along is the mystery now? Have you ever made any of Bonnie's other patterns? Right now I'm making yet another "Streak of Sunshine" baby quilt. I've made zillions of them. They are darling & super easy to make. I've been saving fabric for a reproduction version of her "Chunky Churndash" pattern.

In case you're curious, yes, I'm a newbie (today is my 1st day here). Not to quilting, but to this site. I'm super glad I found it & hope it will results in lots of new quilts & new friends.

Have a fabulous Friday, everybody!

I totally agree with Poly (at least on this topic). Letting someone else quilt my larger quilts is the responsible way of getting them finished. An unquilted top is nice but not as useable as a quilted top.
