OT: Impulse actions

Last time I saw my Dr he insisted I get more exercise. But slowly and in little bits. Problem is, sometimes I can walk a mile and sometimes I get down to the mailbox and have to sit and wait before I can get back to the house. It hits fast and hard and I'm a bit uneasy about walking because if I get somewhere and can't get back, well it's embarrassing and scary.

So I've been looking at machines and thinking about it and yesterday we went to the mall for a salad spinner and came home with a treadmill. It was a return, the people had it a week and didn't like it. Heh. So we got a $900 machine for $275 plus more for an extended warranty.

I won't be buying fabric for a long, long time and this summer's planned class is now canceled. But I think I can get my blood pressure back in the human range and maybe feel a bit better. It's in front of the television in the basement. There's no sunshine, air conditioning in summer and heat in winter, and a bathroom for if the wall hits me hard as it sometimes does and I can't pop a nausea pill fast enough.

Impulse. My middle name. Anybody know any good DVD''s about quilting (real cheap hehehe)?

Good luck with the tread mill Sunny. I don't have one, but have used one in a two week hotel stay in the US once and it was great. My legs got really strong just doing a brisk slight incline walk, 25 min each morning. You'' be surprised how easy it is and the results in a little while. I was able to run after balls on the tennis court much faster after my two week work out LoL. I still play tennis and DH and I walk along the beach esplanade every morning at 6.30am for 40 min. I miss it when we don't do it.

I wore the tread out on the one here. Dh said it was too old to bother with the cost of a new runner so it is gone. I am hesitant to bring in another since they take up so much room. I might feel different when it is too cool out to walk much though. If you use the thing it is great. If it just collects dust won't help you at all, just gets in the way. Hope you can enjoy it Sunny. Taria

Oh, Sunny, one more thing -- I was just watching The Ellen DeGeneres show on TV and they had some vision of things you shouldn't do on tread mills. Take note: Do not ride a bicycle on the machine. Do not hop on a pogo stick on the machine. Dancing hip-hop on the machine is not a good idea either.

But I'm sure you know these things LoL.

Darn it, Bronnie! I had my hip-hop collection all ready by the treadmill. I was figuring on dancing my heart out while the tread spins. ROFL!!

One place you might check for used exercise equipt. is a chain of stores called "Play It Again Sam". We bought a Treadmill and a Weight machine for less than half of the cost of the same machines new. Exercise equipt. is one of those things that is often purchased with great intent but sold after little use. Not sure if those stores are located everywhere in the country, but there is probably a local equivalent near you. My wife uses the treadmill while watching "Ellen" every day. She makes it part of her daily activity. I ride bikes so that is my way of maintaining my slim trim boyish figure. Ya Right!

Nah. I'm right here in Mississippi watching yet another 3 days of flooding rain come in. But, I was going to recommend doing the tread thing for only

10 minutes at first. Just 10 minutes of walking will do good things for you. Polly

So how cool is too cool to walk outside in southern California? Does it get too hot to walk outside in the summer? Here in southern Minnesota, I walk the 3/4 mile or so to the "Y" unless the wind chill is below 10 degrees F or so; it takes me about 12 minutes. I wouldn't be going out for a lengthy stroll at the temperature, but I wouldn't be doing it when the summer temp is 85 degrees with 90% relative humidity either.

Ok, the truth is we are wimps here. I am in the high desert so it is very different here weather wise than what you think of as So cal weather. 40 is too cold. We get a lot of wind here since we are on the edge of the desert at the top of a mt. pass. I don't head out in the wind. I can swim in the summer. Folks walk in the early morning mostly during summer months. By 10 in the morning we are hiding out in the AC. It cools off here at night unlike the low desert. When I moved here 20 years ago from San Diego I didn't even own a warm coat and had never seen snow falling. If housing prices drop enough I am heading back there. TAria

Living here on the coast [we are less than a mile from the ocean] it gets down to mid-30s probably two dozen times a year. I draw the line to walk at freezing point. I also draw the line to walk at 75 degrees. Much prefer the cool of dawn for my 3 mile walk.

And to think I used to work outside everyday in all weather from snow to tornados to 110 degree heat waves to downpours.

Got a mini-trampoline and stepper to use when I cannot get out to walk, but making a concerted effort to do one of those everyday [walking preferred!]. Don't trust the drivers around here to ride a bike.

Good for you! With some practice, if you don't get motion-sick, you may find you can read on a treadmill. Just don't drop the book--it'll get eaten by the machine. Um, not that I've ever had to replace a library book or anything. Nope, not me.

Good for you, Sunny! I had a treadmill for a time, but it was in a bedroom and not where I could watch TV or anything; I sold it. As for DVDs, do you have a laptop? You could watch some of the freebie Sharon Schamber videos from her site or from YouTube ....

Thanks for all the good advice and info....I walked a mile yesterday

-- 1/4 of a mile at a time. That's what I'm aiming for, just pieces of time that maybe will add up and increase my stamina.

I was in a good adaptive exercise class, loved the other ladies in it and loved going. But about a year or so ago it became too much. I would have to leave early and then be in bed for the rest of the day. Like I said, I love to walk (out in the air and nature) and used to walk a lot every day if I could. But these days I really have to be careful and Dr said not to push. Believe me, I'm not pushing, LOL. So I'm strolling along at an embarrassingly slow pace on a flat terrain and enjoying the feel of muscles creaking back into action. Good stuff for sure.

Hi Polly, I guessed you were still in the swamp, but it was just as if Bronnie had taken the words out of your mouth!

I know. I really should try to be a better influence but it's just too late to start now. Polly

Hey Sunny,

I know money is tight, but imo, the treadmill is a good investment, since it will allow you to exercise when you're up to it. Your health is important and YOU'RE WORTH IT!

I understand your exercise issues. My health issues are not nearly as serious as yours, however, I have terrible allergies that sometimes keep me bottled up indoors and just wear me out. Then I use the treadmill. When I feel lousy, I just get on it for five minutes at a time. But at least it's better than nothing.

Great deal, btw. :-)

Your weather is like ours Taria (southern Nevada). When I moved here from Kansas--not as cold as MN, but much colder than NV--I thought the temps were great. Now, I've lived here long enough, I've turned into a wimp, and I whine when the low temps hit the 40's too.

Are you in Pahrump or Vegas? Our weather is really similar to there. Better than a lot of places for weather but I sure don't like the wind. Taria

LOL! I think that happens to all of us, Michelle. OTOH, we tolerate the heat a trifle more patiently than people who aren't used to that, either.
