OT: keep your fingers crossed...

I heard from my M.D. about my MRI from last week.

The results are in: I have a herniated disk --between C6 and C7 vertebrae. The disk is pressing against the primary nerve that feeds the entire left arm. (which explains the horrendous pain !!)

The good news... over the past week the pain has started to diminish. When this first started... I would sit and fight back tears it hurt so badly. Now I even have periods of time with NO pain -- the remainder of the time I would describe it more as "discomfort" than pain.

My prospects:

It appears it might be healing -- and may completely clear up on its own. Physical therapy to strength the neck and shoulder muscles. Surgery to correct the disk problem.

So -- here's to it healing up on its own!

I just read an article about herniated disks. They do heal themselves most of the time. It just takes a while. I have a bulging disk, and it has been causing me lots of trouble the last few years. Long story short, I went to a pain management doctor, and he did a procedure 3 weeks ago as an outpatient type surgery. They went into the epidural space in your back, and shot all kinds of stuff in my back, then gave me an injection in my right hip. I have been pain free for 3 weeks now. This is the first time in 2 years I haven't had severe knee pain. There is not guarantee how long it will last. Some people get relief for 6 months, and some for 2, 3,4 years and longer. I would not hesitate to do it again. I hope this keeps improving for you.

That is good news! But I'd look into #2 as a preventive measure for next time. Roberta in D

Absolutely, Kate! But if that doesn't happen, physical therapy can work wonders. I had a herniated disk in my neck several years ago and couldn't move at all without the kind of pain you describe, but PT (no surgery!) had me back in business again in just a few months.

DH has a prolapsed lumbar disk: occasionally that gives him nasty pain, and sometimes a session with the osteopath helps.

Crossing my fingers, toes, legs and eyes. It's amazing how much your body can heal on its own, sometimes. Physical therapy is wonderful, but I found that I had to do exactly as I was told--not always easy for a rebellious personality. When I hurt my shoulder last winter, the physical therapists did in two weeks what the doctor could not do in three months. I still keep up the exercises, don't want a recurrence.

Wishing you the best, Kate! And I just want you to know that the surgery is not so bad, just takes time and dedicated therapy to heal up afterward. Being pain-free is worth it, believe me.
