OT: Little Girl Barrettes

Anyone out there know of any free patterns or pictures of ideas for cute little girl barrettes on the net? DSis has started putting barrettes in DNiece's hair and is paying a fortune for them. and they don't look complicated at all to make. I am going to make her some like them in other colors and would also like to make some different looking ones. I've done a quick search for ideas/patterns on the internet, but so far have not turned up anything for a little girl, just older girls/women. I will continue to search, but figured since you are such a resourceful and knowledgeable group someone here may know of some too. TIA!!!

I don't know about actually making the barrettes themselves. The metal (or plastic) parts would be tough to fashion.

But jewelry and craft stores sell plain metal barrettes (see some here)

that can be used as a 'base' to decorate. Another site I found was

When my oldest was young (some twenty odd years ago) I used ribbon to thread through the barrettes.

I should have written that a bit clearer. That is what I plan to do. I am intending to take little clips and small plain barrettes and decorate them to jazz them up a bit (which is what DSis is buying, but is paying alot for someone else to do the jazzing). What I need is patterns or pictures for different ideas so she can have a variety, not just one or two styles in different colors (I can copy well, I just can't always come up with the ideas). DNiece is just shy of 1 so they need to be small thus the ones I've found so far with the large clips won't work. I think I need to rephrase my search. I'll also look at the links you provided L. Thanks!!

(Just embroidered ones - not the live ones that are so big they have to land at the airport.) This offer only for known rctq folks. It still is really creepy to me that our posts are broadcast just everywhere. Polly

I made some of the braided ribbon barrettes for DD when she was little. She's 34 now, so I suppose it was at least 25 years ago. I also made a bunch for the nieces' Easter baskets that year.

My DD is 29. So yes, it was about a quarter century ago that I made them. Amazing that the instructions can still be found!

For an infant you probably want to avoid some of the standard techniques, things like monofiliment can be skritchy on baby skin. I would either use goop or hot glue to glue things directly on to the appropriate sized barettes, or attach the pretties to a bit of fabric and then glue the fabric down. Things like little bows, the small dimensional floral appliques they sell at places like Jo-Ann's, ribbon frills, lace rosettes, small bits of embroidery, maybe very small silk flowers, suchlike things or combinations thereof are possibilities for sewing onto fabric and then glueing. Depending on the barette you are using as a base, sometimes you can bring the fabric right around under the top and sew it. Whether it is possible with common baby barettes right now I don't know, the fashion in such things changes a lot. Acrylic gems, assorted charms, and other jewelryish things are more suited to being directly glued on.

Personally I would stick to soft material sewn down then glued for a one year old, and save the glittery bits and beadwork for when she is a few years older. YMMV

Very good ideas. I'll play around and we'll just see what we end up with. Thanks NightMist.
