OT - My "new" toy!

.....an embroidery machine!!!! I've thought about getting one for ages - mostly to do stuff for the Grandkids and Christmas (ornaments), but kept talking myself out of one 'cause of the price. Well, long story short, a friend asked me a couple of weeks ago if I wanted to buy her "old" Brother-150 emb.mach. [She just got a new, really fancy one] - price was cheap, so I bought it! It only does one spool of thread at a time, and is a PITA to change needles or remove the bobbin plate to clean (not enough room for a regular screwdriver ), BUT it looks like a fun thing to have...and she added two embroidery cards of designs that she had duplicates of. She brought it over a week ago, but I've been busy canning/freezing stuff from the garden, so I haven't had time to sit down with the manuel and try it.

Well, this morning I did my first embroidery project (a Thanksgiving turkey!!). It turned out really well and was easy-peasy to use, and now I think I'm hooked!!

Question - I know there's a "gadget" that you can hook into your computer and use to transfer downloaded internet designs on to a card to plug into the embroidery machine. In fact, there's two different "gadgets" ("boxes") - one is smaller/simpler? than the other and about half the price. Does ANYBODY out there use one of these & download embroidery designs? I'd love to get others' opinions on these. Seems like the "cards" with preloaded designs are a little pricey (and you get a bunch of designs, many of which you may NOT ever use. . . a waste of $$)

All assistance / opinions appreciated! My machine, a Brother150, uses .PES design format.

Hi Judy,

Many, many congrats on getting your new toy! What fun! As for your question, I know NOTHING about embroidery machines, so....

You'll need some sort of software for getting designs. Embird is a wonderful program, and much cheaper than the programs that the dealers sell. If you want to email me privately, I'll guide you. I've been embroidering for years. Gen

Afraid I can't help (and I have my own machine upstairs I need to figure out how to use!)

But I would suggest you go to Yahoo! Groups -- search for Brother Embroidery ... and I'm sure you'll find lots of folks who will help you with your machine, accessories - -and may even point you to some very inexpensive or shared (legally) designs!

This link may not work -- but we'll try...

I agree with Gen - Embird is the way to go, affordable and expandable. I have an Ultimate Box to transfer designs, and the Embird software is compatible with that. There's no need to buy pricy cards - just get the Box and a blank Ultimate Card and you can download more designs than you will ever have time to embroider - both free and reasonably priced.

I'll be seriously looking into the Embird software I think. I've gotten the Box to transfer designs and I'm having a ball looking at all the designs online! (The box came with a card). Can't wait for the gardenwork to finish up and all the other stuff going on to calm down - then I can really play with my new toy (before Christmas - want to make some ornaments!) ME-Judy
