OT-Myastenia Gravis (long)

As some of you know, my Father had a heart attack 9 week ago and recovered quickly. They were here in Michigan for a quick 24 hour surgery when it happened. On June 27th, 24 hours before they were about to head back home to South Carolina, it appeared that he had a stroke, well apparently that's not the case. 10 days after the systems started he was told that it wasn't a stroke but Myastenia Gravis in crisis mode after the stress of the heart attack. They started him on medicine and within 12 hours he began to get better. He could breathe while laying flat, swallowing and etc. He's now on the Rehab floor and starting to regain some strength. His goal is to get back down south as soonas possible! Does anyone know anyone who has these??

Hi Jill - so sorry to hear of your Dad's diagnosis - while there is no known cure for myasthenia gravis, there are multiple treatment methods available - there is plenty of information available these days from various MG foundations (google - myasthenia gravis) and help. It falls into the muscular dystrophy category of auto-immune diseases and research is always ongoing. I don't personally know anyone with the disease at this time but I remembered that Roger Smith - actor, 77 Sunset Strip and married to Ann-Margaret - was diagnosed many years ago. Well, I googled him: he was first diagnosed in 1965 (3yrs after a blood clot on the brain which cut short his career as an actor) - he married Ann-Margaret in

1967 (second wife) and he went into remission in 1985. He's apparently still leading a career as his wife's manager and is a productive member of society. I hope that your Dad is able to return to his home state for continued treatments with a knowledgeable and caring healthcare team. jennellh

I work with someone who has this. When I first joined this company 6 years ago, she had it then. She sometimes walks with a cane to steady herself but she has routine procedures which she fondly calls "oil changes" which are really a procedure to filter her blood. It's called a plasma phoresis (spelling may be off). I can tell when its getting close to her next one when she starts to slur her words and has difficulty swallowing. She starts to speak like her tongue has swollen but I believe it may be muscular related. The oil changes do the trick. I'm not sure what they are filtering from her blood.

She functions very effectively and deals with her treatments. Other than the "oil changes" she is never out of work sick.

I hope this helps. I hope your Dad bounces back quickly.
