OT New QI!

A large shaggy dog joined our household tonight. I've been looking for a dog for a couple of weeks, and this one won the pet lottery! Spike, Giles and I met him last week, and they thought he was great, even though he is nose to nose with Giles. His foster "parent" brought him to our house this evening to meet the rest of the family. Even DH (who is not a dog person) thinks he's pretty neat. Very calm, very mellow, very big!

I was looking for a small-to-medium size dog, but he is 40 pounds and over 3 feet long! Long shaggy coarse fur, mostly black but sprinkled with white, making him look like an old man. But we have been assured by a vet that he is around 2 years old.

He came with the name Roscoe, but I'm pretty sure we'll be changing it. The kids are all thrilled, as am I. He's such a sweetheart! He has already flopped down on DH's quilt and decided it was a comfy place to lie. :-) I'm afraid he's 4th in line (at least) for a quilt of his own, though. I wonder if he'd prefer fabric with dogs on it, or with cats? Hmmmm.

Here's his publicity photo:

He's adorable! He looks like he will be a great pet for your girls. Do you know what breed he is?

I see quite a sense of humor in those bright eyes. Be prepared to play. Hide and Seek and Fetch will do for a start. Rub the ears for us, Polly

Ol' Roscoe really lucked into it this time. He ought to get more than his fair share of affection at your house. (He sort of looks like Bing Crosby, give him a pipe and see if he starts crooning) RedQueen

Congratulations! He is fantastic. That name Roscoe suits him, but I know y'all will come up with something else you prefer. That's part of the fun. When you change the name, just call him with double name (Roscoe-_____ ) for a while and eventually drop the Roscoe.

IMO, with picture and your comments, I w>

Mazel tov! He looks like a sweetheart! Actually he looks like a larger version of our first dog, also adopted young, who lived to be 17 and is still missed over 10 years later.

Oh Wendy, he's lovely. Big dogs often have the sweetest temperaments. I thought Irish Wolfhound too!!! KCK said you were ready for a dog, when you said some time ago that you thought a pet might be a good idea!!!! I'm so pleased you have your little 'other person' now - whatever he is. Have great fun. . In article , frood writes

He's precious!!! Someday we will have a dog, but DH has said "not while there are 3 cats already in the house!" I would suggest, for his quilt, using fabric that had cats and fabric that had bones on it..of course, you might want to throw in some fabric with cars on it..you know, the sterotypical things that go with dogs...lol

Congratulations on the newest member of your family. May you have many many happy years together. He looks like a sweetheart of a guy. Give him a scritch behind the ears for me please. Diana

Fortunately, stubbornness is a family trait. My dad always said I was so stubborn the other McLarens noticed. :-) We used to have a beagle, and they are known for stubbornness, too. Our obedience trainer said she did very well, for a beagle. And I grew up with a Westie, so I have a real fondness for terriers.

Spike is calling him "Rock-so", which is as close as she can get to Roscoe. He sits when she tells him to - it's so cute!

Sounds good, and a blackand white dog can profitably shed on any color fabric!

He's *adorable*, Wendy! If "adorable" is a good word for such a large dog. But calm and mellow are good. ;) Can't wait for more pics!

Wendy Where I come from, a 40 lb dog that is 3 feet long IS a small dog. As a child, our first dog was 80 lb lab/collie cross. We used to ride on her. When she died (of old age- 12, not from kids sitting on her and breaking her back) we got a golden lab/great dane mix - 120 lb of yellow puppy. My first dog weighed only 35 lb. My whole family laughed at such a puny dog. After she died (old age - 13), I got a 45 lb dog. My sister still laughs at me. She has an 80 lb dalmation and a 75 lb Alsatian mix. Smallish, but together that's 155 lb of dog. My younger sister finally took the heat off me by getting a 15 lb Scottie. For what it's worth, I know a dog that looks exactly like ex-Roscoe but is considerably larger. Her head is level with my ribs. She's a lovely mellow dog too so maybe that particular mix of breeds produces big gangly mellow dogs. I'm so glad you got ex-Roscoe from a shelter. That's how I got all my dogs too. I don't care about breeds at all and there are so many wonderful dogs looking for homes. Enjoy! Nancy - keeper of the herd that currently consists of Rosie the extremely blond Nova Scotia duck toller mix mutt..... as well as Lou the brain damaged diabetic cat, Ollie the ex-roadkill cat and my one and only human baby, Grace.

At first glance he looked like a Scotty. A BIG Scotty. I kind of like Roscoe, but maybe . . . Big Fala?

Welcome, Roscoe (or whoever you end up being).

Will you be putting flames on his sides?
