OT -- PDA vs paper planner

I never go anywhere without my PDA. I keep everything in there, including shopping lists, wish lists, a list of my quilt books so I don't buy duplicates; the list goes on and on. The only thing I would recommend that I haven't seen mentioned is that if you're going to invest in a PDA, spend an extra couple of bucks and buy a backup module for it. The Palm OS is pretty stable, but crashes are not unknown, and using the backup module will prevent you from losing any entries you put directly into the PDA, and if it does crash, you can restore your data without synching, if you're away from home at the time.

I've had a Palm since the Palm III came out. I have a Palm VII and a Tungsten C now. I have never experienced a crash, even after dropping my Palm III in a puddle when it fell out of my pocket when getting out of a car. I just used a blow dryer to dry it off and it worked great. Backups are stored on your PC, so even though it may not be immediate, you can still recover from a crash. I would prefer to spend the extra money on software than a backup module. But that's just me........

Actually, my Clie has to have a memory stick to run some of its features (playing music and video taping) and that is all that is required to backup without hotsyncing. I haven't done it yet tho. I prolly should.

I have 70+ pictures I took with my PDA at the World Quilt and Textile show last week. I stored them on my memory stick and I set up a slide show of them in my photo stand and just play it for my quilting friends. Too fun.

Ruth, I've ordered directly from Palm on the internet, with very good results. Just FYI.

See, it is a quilting tool! High tech quilting tool, but a quilting tool nonetheless!

I'm somewhere between the two of you. I've had a Palm III, a IIIC and now a Zire 71. I've had one crash (on the III), and my Mac had the backup reinstalled into the Palm in moments. No problem! :)

I already love my PDA for grocery shopping. Sure beats little pieces of paper that I always manage to leave behind when I head for the store.

Besides, my ToDo list stays in the PDA, so if I don't get everything done that's on the list, it's still there & not on another piece of paper someplace that has already gotten lost!

Anything in my PDA can get "beamed" to a printer! I love that!

I think I need a PDA class from all of you pros with your PDA's. You keep talking about doing things that, at the moment, I have no idea how do to!!!!

My PDA came with a free class, but I haven't taken it yet. I wanted to play with it a while first so I'd know what to ask. :D

I had mine next to my puter while it was on. I was using it as a remote control cuz I didn't wanna get up to get the real one... anyway, my computer said, "I sense another computer nearby. Transfer files?" I didn't want to, but I did find that interesting.

OK, can any of you tell me what progammes other than Outlook, one can use to store all the information one needs on a PDA? At present, I use Incredimail for e-mails and Outlook express for newsgroups?

Most PDAs come with a program for desktop access to your info, and the software to keep it in sync with your PDA -- Palm OS PDAs come with Palm Desktop, which is very serviceable, and works on both Mac and Windoze computers.

Well, before that I hadn't noticed the infared thingy (tech term) on the side of my laptop! LOL H said, "Oh look. You also have a fireline. Cool." Huh? I guess that's good, but since I don't have a cable that fits it, I can't use it anyway.

From all this talk about PDAs I just had to try one out while in Staples the other day... and , of course, tried a colored one....Loved it.!!!...haven't a real use for it ..but if I had some extra $$$ hanging around I'd buy it in a flash...just because I love gadgets. Mary

Good idea. Great idea. A CD burner is on my list of "ought to buys" right along with the digital camera, CD player, record turntable (Yes!), and long-arm quilting machine. As soon as it cools down, I plan a trip to a town where these exotic animals are sold. Except the last item.
