OT: Pickles

David and I have been thinking about trying our hand at making pickles this summer. Can I use regular, old cucumbers or do I need to be looking for something special.

The cucumbers you'd buy for salads and such in the stores won't make good pickles. First of all they have usually been sprayed with a wax to keep them from drying out, and second you will end with a mushy or soft pickle. Make sure you buy "pickling cucumbers". They are different variety than your regular salad cucumbers and they haven't been waxed.
