Polly, DD wandered through the kitchen when I was baking this morning and the radio was on. Good old Jerry Reed was singing about Amos Moses. Not sure if you are familiar or remember that song but dd laughed and shook her head at the silly song. I told her it made me think of you and your gators and swamp. She was still laughing at me, Jerry Reed, and maybe you too when she exited the room.

They don't make songs like that any more. That may well be a good thing! Taria

Oh my yes, we love Jerry Reed. Used to love to watch him, he's quite incredibly talented. While we're baking, I have a question. I use a brush to very, very gently swipe on a coat of beaten egg white on my loaves of bread and sprinkle on some sesame seed. Never know exactly how to wash the brush. Soap doesn't seem like a good idea. Vinegar would clean but might leave the lingering smell of eau d' Easter egg dye. Thought about lemon juice. Just how do you clean a pastry brush? Polly

Hahaha....that brings back memories. When my son was just about three years old Amos Moses was his very favorite song. Whenever it came on the radio he'd run over and sing. Or I'd hear him playing and singing that song at the top of his lungs in the back yard. Too funny to hear a little biddy boy singing it and imitating Jerry Reed.

I wash my pastry brush with dish soap. Run warm water, put a few drops of dish soap on the palm of your hand, gently work up a lather (ala shaving brush), then rinse under running warm water while tickling the soap out of the bristles and then I hang it bristles down by using a Big Bag tater chip clip to clamp it on the cupboard door to dry. I've been doing this for years and as yet no brushes have been harmed. I also don't buy "pastry brushes". I buy a nice soft bristled brush in the hardware store paint department. Not only are they cheaper, they are a better quality than what you find in cooking departments.

Whenever I hear Amos Moses I think of Doug Kershaw because he is the first one I ever heard do it. It was on some TV show back in the 70's. If it were not for the fact that if you see him perform there is no way on this earth you are ever gonna confuse Doug Kershaw with anybody else I would wonder if I was mistaken, for I've never heard a version by him since.

I also use a cheap bristle brush for pastry. For egg I rinse it in cold water and then use a bit of my paintbrush soap on it. The paintbrush soap is specificly for acrylics and works admirably well on other substances containing long chain molecules, like protiens. Plus it is non toxic, conditions the bristles, and rinses out really well. (G)

And I was in one of the annual open-air markets last week, where there's always a big stall selling wooden kitchenware. They had great big spoons with yard-long handles, like my MIL used to own for stirring her kettle of laundry. I thought of Polly too. Roberta in D

The wooden spoon adventure? I have some wonderful ones from

Super nice guy there gave me a 4th one free. Naturally, I didn't know how to choose and like the one he picked out the best. The 'snake' spoon, with a strange ergonomic handle doesn't fit me; apparently the ergo fits a large hand better. I am grateful for the recommendation. The wooden spoons do a good job, they are very comfortable, and frankly, I enjoy just holding them. They are quite lovely. Polly

"Taria" How did your adventure with wooden spoons go? I didn't notice a report

Eee-gads, my grandmother had a spoon like that. It could reach out and get in at least two good smacks on the bottom of an errant child running at full speed away from the scene of a crime!
