Black-eyed peas etc are the order of the day for New Year's and when I turned to my cookbooks I realized that I'd never recommended to you: the American Heart Association's cookbook. It is very possible that there's not one recipe in it that you will ever follow exactly. OTOH, there are lots of ways to make food you and your DH enjoy both safe and still great. Get one. Polly

dont forget the chickpeas. from what i've read they're very good for a variety of body parts and systems. lower blood pressure, lower weight with all that fibre and strengthen the arterial walls. just in case you're sick of oatmeal all the time. j.

Thanks Polly. I have it. I have a pretty extensive collection of low fat cook books at this point. I am so trying with all this. Cardiologist has become a vegetarian over the last few years and now is suggesting that. I am doing pretty fair for the most part. If dh is willing to try I am willing to do my part. I love to cook and that helps. Sorry if I am grumping here. I figure I can get a bit of sympathy here and maybe even get some folks thinking about what they are eating too. I am working at not griping to dh. He is trying. I am getting to be pretty good with tvp! We probably eat better than most folks at this point. I still miss much of the junk but I am adjusting. Thanks for thinking of us. Taria

last night dh made a nice curry out of the last of the pork on our xmas leg. he added some chickpeas/garbonzo beans to the curry. deeeeeeelicious!! oddly enough i didnt like them as a kid, not sure why, must of been how mom used them. i really like them now in most anything but mostly in hummus. i use it as a bread spread rather than butter/margarine type spreads. ok, not always but for lunch with sometimes cottage cheese/tomatoes/salad greens et al. yup, could eat them daily i reckon. i'm working on getting my 24ounces a week as was suggested. j.

mmmmm, that sounds deeeeeelicious. i'm putting tumeric in lots of things now. usually make little difference to the taste but adds colour and iirc, how silly that sounds, it is supposed to stave off dementia/alzheimers. maybe its too late for me. oh well. j.

1/2 cup red lentils 1.5 cups water plus veggie bouillon powder garlic onions (substitute a bit of leek if you have it) olive oil turmeric curry powder celery pumpkin (about 2 cups cubes) carrots (2) potatoes (2) can of whole tomatoes Fry the chopped garlic and onions in oil until golden. Add lentils and hot veggie broth, cook until lentils are tender. Add other veggies (cut up), plus more water if you think it needs it, and simmer until potatoes and pumpkin are tender. Add salt and pepper to taste. You could throw in some spinach and cook until wilted at this point, but I had no more room in my pot. Roberta in D

You're right on, J. Tumeric is highly recommended by the nice doctor on FOX Sunday morning. It may not be too late for us. Polly

they are the same colour. i guess too much beer is good for forgetting. add lots of tumeric to remember. they probly cancel each other out.
