Dear friends, could I ask you for some prayers and good thoughts for one of my feathered QIs.... Sunshine, our 27-year old Blue and Gold Macaw, is at the Small Animal Hospital at Cornell University tonight. Long story short, she hadn't 'acted' quite right the last two days so I kept my eye on her. Tonight when I got home I went right down stairs and she was very lethargic and breathing heavily. She hadn't drank any water and she hadn't eaten. Fortunately Cornell has certified avian vets there so we brought her right over. She has fluid build up in her abdomin. They put her in a oxygen tent, sorta like a incubator, and they are going to try to drain the fluid some tonight. Tomorrow they hope to take an xray to see if she is egg-bound. If not the next thing is a kind of scan where they look to see what her organs are like. Oh yea, tonight they'll also try to get some blood to do blood work and get her on a broad spectrum antibiotic. One concern is that it might be somethign the otehr birds could catch.
One thing about birds, when they get sick, it's down hill VERY quickly. She's a very sick bird; it's quite possible we could loose her. I hope not. Please keep her in your prayers. We've had her 25 years and she's like a kid to DH and me.
Love, Irene
