OT Re: Clipart

I usually use Microsoft Office Clipart without any problems, but suddenly it has decided it doesn't like me!

I get the menu, choose a catagory and get 'There are over 1,500 cliparts in this catagory, please narrow your search, but the bit where you can narrow your search is pale grey and doesn't function. I have noticed that the style of the main page has changed - 'new, improved'?

Ive tried googling free cliparts, but just seem to get passed from one link list to another.

All I want is a party picture to put on the bottom of a poster - balloons, streamers, etc.

Can anyone help - or recommend a free site that actually has pictures on it!

Don't know any specific sites, but if you google "free clip art birthday party" (for example) you'll get plenty. Roberta in D

I just saw this on my newspaper tech page and thought it migth be of interest to you. I know you found another clip art source, but just in case you want to resolve your Microsoft issue.... Elizabeth in Spring, Texas Clip art error in Word Q. I am getting an error message when I try to search for and / or download clip art into Word 2000 that says "Clipart cannot complete the operation. Interface not registered. Error code 0x80040155." It's a message that I did not get until recently. How do I correct this?

A. There are three potential fixes for this problem. I am going to give them to you in the order of complexity, starting with the easiest and working our way up.

The most likely culprit is the registration the Ole32.dll file on your computer. To remedy this just click on Start, Run and type regsvr32 ole32.dll in the Open box and click OK. You should see a message returned that says "DllRegisterServer in OLE32.DLL succeeded." Once this is complete, reboot your computer and see if the problem has been corrected.

If you still receive the error, try to run a Detect and Repair in Microsoft Word. Click on the Help menu and select Detect and Repair and let it run through the process. When it finishes see if you can insert a clip art file into a new document.

If both of these suggestions do not remedy the situation, Microsoft suggests an in-place upgrade of Windows. This is a re-install of the Windows XP operating system that only refreshes the operating system files and leave all of your other installed applications and your files as they are.

The in place upgrade is a risky procedure and I don't recommend it unless you simply cannot live without the ability to insert clip art into your Word documents. If you decide to move forward with this you should backup any data you cannot live without and make sure that you have the ability to reload your software in the event of a catastrophic failure.

The procedure for XP is outlined in Microsoft KB315341 and the procedure for Windows 2000 is located in Microsoft KB292175.

if you do decide to reinstall windows.... be sure 'FIRST' to move all your files into new folders that you name. if not, all those files in the windows default folders will disappear. it will 'overwrite' everything...gone gone gone. oops. i dont save anything into windows default folders anymore after learning the hard way. cheers, jeanne

I NEVER save or transfer ANYTHING to the Windows default folders.

On C: I have a folder called 00MyFiles and everything is in sub directories under there. Backing up all my info just requires running SYNC to D:. Even my programs (the ones I load as opposed to Windows and Office, which get loaded by the tech who works on the PC) are in a separate sub-directory under Programs.

I try to always reset the default save setting on everything I load, but I HATE that so many programs set themselves as the new default when they are installed (eg. after installing the software for my digital camera, when I double clicked on an image file it opened in Kodak Easy Share just 'cos Kodak thought it should be the default. I want most of my images to open in either PAINT or Corel thankyou, including my camera images!)

My maxim is - never accept the default unless you are really really really sure it is what you want! And then think again!

Overly distrustful - you bet!

A little paranoid - just 'cos you're paranoid doesn't mean they aren't out to get you!

Who can trust an industry (the software industry) that makes (as an industry) massive profits from dumbing-down software year after year to accommodate the lowest common user level? It drives me nuts that so much of my software - when upgraded - seems to set up the defaults it has been told and gives the user less and less room to change those settings. Don't anyone even dare mention pictogram buttons in place of drop-down menus.

And as for accepting Windows defaults - not till Hell freezes over. After all the hassles I have had running systems using Microsoft "stuff"? Huh! We would ring back to Microsoft Head Office with a problem and their response was likely to be either "That's not a fault, it's feature" or "Yeah we noticed that too. Any idea what causes it?" (I have had both answers more than once)

Oh dear! I am rambling!! Second time in 24hours I have flown into a rant. Sorry! Just chalk it up to the perfectly justifiable outcome of doing housework ALL WEEKEND instead of going to the quilt show (not to mention my virtual machine 98 environment is not behaving).

Well - at least I changed the header.

(sound of a knife being dragged over a steel to sharpen it) now where was that Troll?

((evil snickering sounds))

Thanks - I have printed it all out and handed it to DH. If he can't understand it can send it to DS who is 100 miles away but who can do clever things to our computer from there (he works for/in computers and can help when it is beyond us!)

Better yet, partition your hard drive so that the only thing on C: is Windows. Then save everything else to the other virtual drives.=20

The biggest benefit of doing this is it creates more protection for your files. I have my system set up with 5 virtual drives. Only Windows goes on C. The other drives are set up with folders for my own programs, i.e. family pictures, classwork, research, EQ5 & 6, etc. When my computer's motherboard went last month, I purchased a new one and then just used the drive on it. I had to reinstall Windows, which overwrote the virtual "C" drive. It is necessary to reinstall my own applicaions but this is only to update the Windows registry so it recognizes the program. All my files were on drives D, E, F, and G, I didn't lose anything else.

This isn't to say one shouldn't back up their hard drive, but rather adds another layer of file protection.

Jeanne - there is a difference between partitioning a drive and creating a virtual environment. Don't confuse the two.

I have a virtaul environment that allows me to have XP running my PC, and I then open what appears to be another window that is the virtual machine that runs on 98. Please don't ask me for all the details on HOW to do it - I had someone come in and set it up 'cos one of my Corel programs doesn't like XP (and probably won't run in Vista at all, but that won't be a problem for me for a while as I never load any Microsoft software that isn't at least 8-10 months old and well reported on!!). After some initial problems (it took N a lot longer to do than anticipated and it had a few gliches along the way) it now runs 98 well. But the mouse movements are a tad jerky, and though this is not an issue for most applications it is a PITA for a drawing program!

ahhhh, that mouse needs a top of cheese no doubt or less dust round his innards perhaps, lol. sorry, had to say it, i'm always cleaning out the innards on my little squeaker. argh. geez, thanks Cher, now i'm never gonna get anything else done til i at least understand all this somewhat. now i gotta go find out what the difference is between 'partitioning' and 'virtual environment'. jeanne
