OT - Receiving blanket

My cousin in the USA is going to be a great grandmother any day now and I was wondering what to make for the babe.

Could someone please explain what a 'receiving blanket' is and what it is used for?

Or is there something more suitable I could make and send her?

Thanks for any ideas.

Just a general explain from me, Di. A 'receiving blanket' is usually very light weight and used to hug, swaddle, wrap a new baby. It helps them feel secure and protects them from the germs, hairspray, QI hair and whatever else might be on the person needing to cuddle them. The blanket can be about a yard square. Doesn't have to be square; rounding the corners sometimes is easier. Can be one thickness or lined and double. Can be hemmed, bound, edged or serged. Babies leak and dribble. Just be sure whatever you stitch is very washable. Polly

Thanks for that Polly, I think here in Australia we call then "Bunny Rugs". I have some lovely soft flannelette so will make that up.

Most receiving blankets here in the US are made of a soft flannel. It is what I usually use for gifts. Barbara, was in Florida, now in wet SC
