Stringing along

After two rather tedious quilts, I decided I would do something mindless and ridiculous, hence - the String Quilt. I'm playing with one from QNM December 1996. If all goes well, it may turn out to be big white stars surrounded by scraps of Christmas fabrics in a sort of kaleidoscope arrangement. Why didn't somebody tell me what fun the stringing is? It just might even reduce the bin entitled 'scraps'. No. That's asking too much. Polly

That sounds really cool!! I did a pair of twin size string quilts recently. They still need quilted though. They turned out really neat.

They'll put a slight dent in the scrap bin.

Have so many scraps so have been making string (or scrappy as I call it) quilts lately. Just finished one except for handsewing the corners and making a label for my 3 month old great granddaughter. I make two kinds. Regular corner to corner ones, and the kind that you put short strips corner to corner and then long strips on opposite sides. Planning on doing that kind next. The quilt I just finished has a combination of those kinds and a few crazy quilt blocks included. I enjoy doing scrappy quilts best. I use a cloth foundation square, which I tear and cut from a white sheet. I lurk a lot in your group. Carol

My scrappy quilts are large lap size. I construct them on my double bed. A lot of different scraps in them. I do tie them, though. I put a fleece blanket on the back. Did a dolphin and just did a deer one. I will try and post one of my scrappy quilts. Carol

Hello, Carol, and welcome. Glad to have you drop in but you're breaking some rules. Nothing that will cause you to wind up in jail but perhaps causing problems from some of our group. I'm not skilled enough to explain why but we do not use a color for a format background, we do not use a font except 'plain' and we do not put one of those square block things within a post to show a picture. I think that is because some of us must receive rctq per minute or size or something and those rules keep us from being so costly. I have no idea what I just tried to explain to you and we will hope that somebody will explain the technicalities. Meanwhile, back to the string quilting: I'm using the Carol Doak paper for a foundation. I am hoping that this will hold my stripping in 'perfect' triangle shapes so that the results really will be stars. I will let you know if this works better than plain fabric for a base. Polly

Polly, I know why but I wouldn't have known it was even there if you hadn't mentioned it. My reader only shows plain text on white background unless I tell it to open an attachment, and since it opens attachments in another window it didn't work properly for me at all.

Carol, you have a HTML signature attachment on your posts. According to our Usenet charter this is a text only news group, so no attachments are allowed. So could you remove the signature attachment on future posts?

I will not use my sig in the future. I really don't understand the rest of the rules. Do you mean I should create my photograph on the plain green background? Sorry for my ignorance. Carol

Hi and welcome from Downunder!

I did not even get your original post. Basically this ng is for just plain text - no background colours, no pictures, no attachments, no nuthin' but plain writin'!! Not even fancy fonts.

We can share pictures through links to web sites or a photo sharing page such as Webshots, but no pictures as attachments to messages.

The signature blocks you see here (such as mine below) have only plain text in them.

Sigs are fine - like mine below. Just don't post pix here or post in html. Plain text only, please! :) Many of us (me included) won't get your messages at all if they are prettied up with pix and fancy text.

The biggest sin on this group is advertising! Just don't! :) (You can put your website in your sig, as I do, but you'll notice that there's nothing for sale on my site - all free info and show & tell.)

That sounds like a fun quilt. Several ladies in my guild make string quilts all the time. I have never made one. I need to add that to my list of quilts to make. Of course, I will need at least 3 lifetimes to get them all made, lol. Hope you post pictures when you are finished.

Hi Carol,

Welcome to the wonderful world of quilters incorporated :>)

Carol, if you are using Outlook Express, when you send a new message or reply, go to "Format" in the top toolbar and select Plain Text. If you are using Microsoft Outlook go to Format and select Plain Text. You will not be able to use a coloured background or attach anything to the post. Many people will not open attachments unless they know the person sending them and been warned prior to the attachment being sent. This helps to eliminate the many virus that come in attachments.

I hope I have explained that easy enough.

Nice things learned about stringing today: using Carol Doaks paper piecing paper as a base works great. After many pressings, it held the shape and measurements just fine. I've heard it said that freezer paper will stretch in one direction and I'm sure I can press a base of cotton fabric out of square. I could probably press the driveway and make it wonky. For those of us who are easily bored, with string piecing you can move from stitching to cutting to pressing without getting into trouble forgetting where you were. The downer - if you're thinking string piecing will diminish your scrap bin, forget it. Polly
