Stringing along

And in conclusion, there is no conclusion. It was my very great good fortune to have a neighbor drop by this evening. She's had one stress after another and badly needed to vent. When she saw that I was removing paper from the quilt top she was just delighted to join me. She left in a much better mood. We will never be sure if it was the airing of her frustrations or the tearing we did that helped. We'll have to think about it. I have decided that paper at any price or no price that must be removed is more time-consuming than I'm willing to invest. Maybe I'll just have to use one of the lightweight stabilizers that can stay in and not add bulk or warp. It is a surprise to me that no one has aimed us at the site for lots of wonderful string quilt blocks. There is a grand collection somewhere but I have no clue where. Weary but quite tickled with the quilt top. It's a keeper. Polly

Carole, the awful honest truth is that I am unwilling to struggle with learning digital camera. My neighbor and camera have gone on a hunting trip in Kentucky. Managing a picture and posting it is slightly harder than herding cats - but (!) this quilt is so special I'm going to have to show it to you all. Thank you kindly for asking. I wish I had (how many times do we say that when a quilt top is finished?) been a little more wonky. I'm afraid I've gotten much too careful with seam allowances and points. With stringing, you need to think way off the wall. Some fine whiskey and chocolate might have been a good start. Polly

For the few string quilts that I've done, I've used squares of batting as the foundation. That way, all you have to do is add a backing. Gen

Howdy!

I have faith in you and the paper foundation, Polly. I also look forward to the chance to call you Miz Cranky Pants. Octagons-- wo! That I haven't tried. Truth is, I didn't know about a foundation piece when I first did string quilts; no brain: no worry.

You can send any rejects this way. Thankyouverymuch. ;-D

Back in the earlier days of RCTQ several of the quilters suggested using the used, clean dryer sheets as a foundation product. Thin, lightweight, adds just enough stability w/out adding bulk, and you don't have to rip it out. Altho' tonight that paper removal may have saved your neighbor's sanity, and it's cheaper than bullets.

String quilts are a great way to use scraps, all kinds, all lengths and sizes:

Thank you for posting the link. My quilt is in it!!! I deleted it from my storage and couldn't remember who I sent it to. I admit I didn't bind it before I sent the picture (had my daughter take a picture of it before I had time to finish it). Carol WA.

Can't we just picture Carol Doak explaining that her paper is cheaper than bullets? Wonderful, Sandy. Thank you. Polly
