Two new quilts finished

Finished two quilts.

  1. Guild challenge -" Flight of Fancy". Fun to do; you'll recognise Ricky Timms fabric (and in the other one as well). Gets judged tomorrow. Not expecting a prize LoL.
  2. "Scrappy Field of Dreams". This was really a great project to play with. All my own design. Used 600 rectangles of different fabric from my stash. Experimented with fabric painting on the green border, what d'ya think?

With the Scrappy Quilt -- The other thought I was going to say about it, I used a new type of batting - cotton & bamboo. It was easy to work with with machine quilting. It has made quite a 'heavy' quilt which surprised me and should be warm and comfortable. I may gift it to a fav girlfriend but I need to keep it until our guild show in August. She is out of state so I can't just retrieve it back for the show. The fabric paint doesnt show up that well in the pix, I used a translucent yellow for the leaves and the touch of gold that is more visable. Its done now, but maybe I should have used a different paint instead of the gold. Having said that, it definitely looks better in the 'flesh'. Gotta try new ideas LoL. I ended up cutting 2x3in rectangles which means 1.5x2.5in finished.

What beautiful work!! All those little pieces would put me in the looney bin. :-) Do you use a lot of metallic thread for your quilting. I just loved looking at your album.

I love the way you finished the scrappy quilt. You are so clever with your designs. But, that Flight of Fancy is just wonderful. All I could do was gaze and gasp. I love absolutely everything about it. It is truly stunning - I'm glad I was sitting down. Thanks for letting us see this Bronnie. . In message , Bronnie writes

This morning my computer's acting like a silly girl in the 7th grade. She's not speaking to Bronnie. Or Pat on her hill. Finally, finally she decided Sharon was not dangerous (little does she know). The quilts are marvelous, Bronnie. I'd love to get a closer look. I'm thinking the scrappy one needs a staircase for hanging. It needs to be admired and displayed all of the time. Polly

Bronnie: Both quilts are lovely. I am surprised that you thought the bamboo/cotton blend batting made a heavy quilt. We used that batting (a 50%/50% blend) on the 2008 Relay for Life quilt, a large Queen size Double Irish Chain. It had extensive quilting, but we did not think it was heavy. I handled it often while selling tickets and the weight issue never came up. I wonder if some of the weight of your project could be due to the many, many small pieces of fabric and to the paint. Right now we have the same pattern/size quilt at the Long Arm Quilters for the 2009 RFL quilt drawing. Woo Hoo! Pat in VA/USA

Ohhh Bronnie. Very cool. There is a wonderful transparancy/layered effect with the Flight of Fancy quilt. Lovely! The scrappy one is fun too.

Bronnie: The gorgeous Flight of Fancy quilt would be a perfect addition to my dining room. The quilt has butterflies that are similar to the Official State Insect of Virginia, so I would be the best recipient for that quilt. I will gladly pay shipping to the USA! (Ha ha, I got my dibs before Ms. B in AZ!) PAT in Virginia

We think 'WOW'. Those are both so different and each so wonderful. I tend to be drawn to scrappy quilts and yours is one of the best I have seen in a good while. Taria

Oh, Bronnie -- Flight of Fancy is gorgeous! I just love that one. You know, I always say that I'm just not very fond of "scrappy", but then people show their scrappy quilts and I do like them. Hmmm ... I think I'd better change my attitude! Your Field of Dreams did turn out wonderfully well, and I'm sure your friend will love it. As for the show, I suspect you're selling yourself short. ;)

Wow, Bronnie -- if it looks better in the flesh then it probably would dazzle my eyes straight out of my head! Both these are gorgeous quilts. I do like butterflies and your Flights of Fancy is incredible. All your work is just gorgeous and this time you outdid yourself. I bet your girlfriend would be happy to wait until fall to get that quilt.

Oh my, Bronnie, Flight of Fancy is absolutely fantastic! If you don't get a prize, I'll be surprised. The competition would have to be very fierce!

Totally enjoyed Scrappy Field of Dreams. My first love is the scrappy quilt. :-) Scrappy Field of Dreams is wonderful!

Sharon I use a little bit of 'feature' metallic thread - but I'm not very good at it really so I try incorporate it to practise LoL. At the last workshop I learnt to put heavier metallic thread in the bobbin and sew from the reverse - that definitely scared me - but I concentrated on straight lines. So I put a couple of the lines in the scrappy quilt. The thing is I am bit 'scotch' with paying $10 for a spool of thread and obviously the more you pay for the quality - the better it behaves. So it's a bit hit and miss with me. Cheers Bron

Thanks ladies for all your lovely comments - I'm in a rush here this morning - off to guild meeting! and I have to get the challenge quilt there by 8.45am which is a bit of challenge for myself LoL. I'll come back to this later if there are questions I need to answer. Love you Bronnie
