baby blanket

Hello everybody

I'm going to make a baby blanket for a DH's friend who's due in September (she lives in Colorado). I was debating what to make the blanket out of. I thought cotton at first, but my husband seemed unimpressed with that prospect.

Is cotton a suitable choice for a baby blanket, or should I opt for something more fancy? Or, is there a "fancy" very soft and impressive looking cotton yarn out there that won't result in a $100 blanket? :)

I just know that mom wouldn't ever bother to hand wash a blanket, so anything machine washable would be appreciated. Thanks for your input!

(for those who are interested, I'm doing a simple afghan stitch with a Tunisian crochet hook to make a nice thermal blanket. any good estimates for how much yarn I'd need for that?)

I agree. When I'm knitting for babies, I always use acrylic or cotton/acrylic blend. Much as I love wool, I won't use it for babies, even if it's superwash or a blend. Sending a ball band(wrapper) is a great idea.

I have used cotton/acrylic blend yarn on occasion and find it is a nice

option -- feels soft and more natural than all acrylic but launders easily. I used Lion Brand Cotton-ease for a sweater and hat for DGD#3 and it has been a hit. It is relatively inexpensive and available. Lots of other choices, of course.

I made some really cute things from Sandnes petit mandarin - patterns were darling. The guage is small, though, so they took more time. It is cotton. I haven't tried the new cotton Dale baby yarn yet.
