Thanks for the tip! I will try it the next time I do HST's. I usually draw the line down the middle, like you said. I did recently buy one of those line markers that you lay on the square from point to point (I think it is a Fons and Porter tool), draw on each side of it and sew on the drawn lines. That is as much work as drawing a line down the middle but I think you can get a more accurate sewing line with the tool.

I'll have to try all three ways and see what I like the best.

It is also good for straight sewing if you tend to make wonky 1/4" seams.

Thanks, Jan, I never thought of extending the tape a bit further for HST. I've used it as a seam guide for years, but didn't make the logical extrapolation (is that the right word?).

Thanks Jan, any help with 1/2 square triangles is appreciated. I'm going to give this a try and see if it works well for me.

I've done basically the same thing with an extra fine tip Sharpie; I made a line coming straight out from the needle and another 1/4 inch away. It was a tip from Susan Cleveland in a class I took from her once. It works great for the triangles and also for the diagonal seams on bindings. The line does wear off and has to be redone periodically.

There used to be a plastic guide that you could buy from a quilt shop. It stuck to your machine bed and had a cut out for your feed dogs. It had the straight line that went from your needle to the edge of the bed for doing half square triangles and other lines for other tricky things. I am drawing a blank on the name though. It was pretty cool. I remember being at the quilt shop once when a delivery arrived and the poor woman was mobbed by customers wanting one. I don't think she even got to hang any on the wall; they were all snatched up.

This is the Angler. I believe there was also an Angler 2, don't know if a further version has been issued. It is a handy gadget.

You would probably get one from a 'quilting' supplier as in a wholesaler - not sure. I tried googling but didn't get very far and in the end I asked on ebay's au craft forum and that's what I got.

Judy is lovely, and very helpful about finding things. Ask her if you are stuck for something. And her newsletters about the emus are a hoot (yes, they farm emus!).

Another good supplier in OZ is Marie at Oz Quilts in Melbourne - also very helpful and obliging, and happy to order just about anything you ask for. Reasonable prices for OZ too!

Thanks for your post. I did read that when I was first pointed to the website. I was apprehensive at first, but thought I would get benefit from the angler even if I only ever used it for HSTs (I think). I have also spoken with Melissa from my local quilt shop and she said that one of her instructors used one during a lesson and most of the class found it to be very useful for them.

I will see how I go with mine.
