huge whine

I HATE sewing long seams. I found out I don't sew so straight. It's not really a problem with 4 inch seams, but the borders on this huge quilt are AWFUL. And there's like 30 borders.

Not really but is seems like it. Plus, I've had to move my sewing area out to the kitchen so I can work on the table and it just doesn't feel right. And everything I need is back in my room.

I'll be glad when this sucker is done.

I want to go back to mini land. It's where I belong.

C'mon now Cindy. Sewing straight is Important! Go find the blue masking tape and put a strip on your SM at a perfect ¼" from where the foot is all the way forward to where it goes off of the edge. Line your seam allowance against your tape and go. Music you enjoy or a movie you love helps heaps too. Jimmy Stewart and Grace Kelly kept me happy while I was pearling last night. Polly

I simply don't much like sewing ANYTHING on a machine -- even my patient little Featherweight -- and generally do 100% of every quilt by hand. However, I just finished piecing the top and the backing for the "seven shirts" quilt via machine and will assemble the sandwich and baste today. (Instead of the "piano keys" 6-inch border, I ended it with the first red sashing, and am making the coverlet into a quillow.) Anyhow, for long seams I just go slowly and have the 1/4" seam allowance marked on the machine with tape. To mark with tape, I used TWO pieces of 1/4" tape, putting the needle down and placing the first (longer) piece of tape butting up to the needle itself and making sure the tape was exactly straight from front to back with a scrap of paper to make sure the tape was straight. Then, I just took another strip of the tape and put it butted up to the first piece. I removed the first piece of tape, and the 1/4" seam allowance is perfect!

Thank you, Mary. You described it much better than I did. If Cindy wobbles those borders, she's going to have such a struggle on her hands. Polly

One tip that helps me is to make that scant 1/4 in. seam guide as long as you can and concentrate on keeping the fabric lined up several inches before the needle- not watching where the needle is going or even right in front of the needle. The needle isn't going to move anywhere but up and down and the feed dogs will draw the fabric thru without your help. All you need to do is help those two do their job by guiding the fabric.

Good luck! You CAN do it!

Thank you for asking. I'm reluctant to bore everybody to tears with the pearl project - BUT ! - the veil is just knock your socks off gorgeous. It has about 8 yards of wee little pearls on the edge and is still light as a feather. I really didn't want to make her head fall off from the weight. All I need now is a bride to try it on. It looks pretty good on DH . Polly

"Bobbie Sews More" Hey Polly! How are the pearls doing? How did you decide to sew them on?

Then forget about how it's feeding through the presser foot at the needle; by the time it gets there it's too late. If you keep your eyes on the tape and keep it straight there, it should feed through the needle perfectly.

Do you think I should take a picture of the 12-point buck wearing the veil and show it at the bridal shower? Polly

YES! Do it, the guests will have a good idea of the type grandmother the bride has! And c'mon, how many buck heads do you know get their picture taken modeling a bridal veil?

Oh, I'm confident I can.... I'm just pretty sure I'm not enjoying it. I'll try the tape thing. And OH! I completely forgot about the table that came with this new sewing machine. That's what it's for, right? To hold the fabric up a little bit. Now where did I put it...

I'd at least show it to the bride! I'll bet she'd love it.

Like anything, it takes practice Cindy. That said, if you really *hate* doing something, sometimes it's best to focus on what you enjoy. That's why I've gone back to primarily hand-piecing and hand-quilting. I like it better than anything on the machine.

Hahahhahahahahh! This monster quilt has 4 borders made up of 1 1/2" black strips. So I got the bright idea of sewing all those strips together, rolling it up and cutting off what I needed. There were 35 strips cut for this. I was very careful to make sure they were all sewn the same way (no right or wrong side to this black solid). I sewed on the diagonal so there wouldn't be an unsightly seam straight across the border.

Somehow, someway, I "mis-sewed" every other seam. That meant I had to cut those seams out and redo them. At first I was taking the seam apart - then realized it was going to be faster to just cut the seam section out.

This is why I hardly ever chain piece anything. Just doesn't work for me.

This quilt hates me.
