OT...some good thoughts needed

I'm not a huge worrier, but if any of you can spare some good, supportive thoughts for DD and her best friend who will be traveling out of Glasgow in the next couple days, I would appreciate it. I'm not overly worried about their safety, but I just hope the last part of their trip will be uneventful and as stress free as possible considering the events of the last couple of days. They both have colds and are feeling a bit run down after two plus weeks of travel and revelry. I just want them HOME!!!!

'They' always say Kathyl, that, where there has been an 'incident' you are much more likely to be safe, as there is so much of a police and other security presence. I can quite understand your anxiety, though. It was a nasty thing to happen, just before travelling. . In message , KJ writes

oh dear, K. i thot they'd closed the Glasgow airport for the time being. that said, if they cant fly out, there are trains, or better yet find a lovely Scotsman and make it a longer vacation. gawd they look ever so cute in their kilts. :) as Patti said, there is all the extra security there now so should be ok up north and round the airports in London to get home. personally, i'd not wander round the city of London tho, to be sure. i guess all we can do now is hope they choose all the right places to be and get home tout suite (sp?). sending all the best travel'n vibes over to DD and her friend for a safe speedy return to the loving arms of their familys. hugz from the south pacific, jeanne

That's why I'm not terribly worried about their safety. I know the security will be so tight that they will probably be safer than before. I just hope they don't get too stressed out about it all since they are at the end of their trip and are tired and not feeling great.

Thanks Jeanne. DH just told me a bit ago that the Glasgow airport was open, but the flights were severely limited. The good part is they don't fly out until Tuesday. Things should be pretty much sorted out by then. To tell the truth, I think this is probably harder on my elderly worrywort father than on the rest of us. He obsesses about this sort of thing.

hmm, with the bombs in London 2 yrs ago, there were repeats in similar places exactly 2 weeks later, fortunately the devices didn't detonate and no one was hurt, but despite extra vigilence they were not detected.

I heard something on the news this morning that implied it was open, but busy, with no cars being let into the area, so people were having to get dropped off elsewhere and walk, or use public transport, but I can't actually find anything on the bbc news that confirms this.

I suppose Glasgow is smaller than Heathrow, so might get back to normal quicker, but last summer we flew into Heathrow a similar length of time after the major high alert over the liquid explosives, so nothing had even happened, but it was complete chaos. I hope they have a good journey.

the main problem with Glasgow might be the damage to the front of the terminal from the 'on fire' SUV they drove into it. that will need to be inspected for safety, possibly shored up for repair and cordoned off from any foot traffic as well. also the inside of terminal will be short of the usual space for passenger processing. aint gonna be no fun 'tall, nope, no fun 'tall. just very memorable i guess. jeanne

Kathy, my husband flies out of Glasgow airport and back again every week. He's there at the moment waiting for his flight and says everything is functioning very much as usual.

I always think you're safest travelling just after something like this has happened.

KJ,

If they both have colds, get them to take nasal sprays or whatever to help clear their nasal passages - it is not smart to fly with a cold, but if you have to, line up as much help as possible!

To keep stress free, allow extra, extra time.

And while we are all busy proving that nothing has change, I think most of us are also a little more careful to pray, think, whatever about the current situation.

Trust me, the UK is different now compared to 2 years ago. But of course, we don't check everyone who enters the public space...

According to national news this morning, flights are getting back to normal out of Glasgow, and the terminal did not look overly busy. If I was flying out, I might check the airlines website, but otherwise just go to the airport. No major delays were reported.

Part of the problem, particularly at Heathrow, last Summer was that the organisation was terrible. Advise was given for people to show up at the airport extra early (more than the 3 hours routinely advised for overseas flights). However, the airport cannot legally hold more than so many people and so if passengers turn up 5 hours before their flight, there is nowhere for them to go.

I agree, I was there too, it was a right mess. Then again, Heathrow is just never particularly well organised from what I have seen. And definitely Glasgow being smaller should help on this.

Thanks for that info Morag! I'm glad to know they have a very good probability to have their flight depart as scheduled. Good advice about the nasal spray! I hope I can find a way to get that information to her. Thanks again.

and so many other things too, flights were being cancelled after baggage had been checked in, so baggage was going round in circles and loads of people we stuck in baggage reclaim - there were piles of bags everywhere and no one seemed to know what or who's they were. I think the US was requiring checks to be done electronically after everyone had boarded (actually I think they do anyway, but they needed more detail or something), so planes were having to wait anywhere there was space to get clearance. Passengers were being checked at boarding as well as at the usual locations, so boarding was taking much longer, so gates were blocked and arriving flights didn't have free gates to go to. Then when they did get to the gates, there wasn't enough baggage handlers to unload the plane. Our plan was about 4hrs late arriving in our departure location (Sea-Tac), then we got delayed by another couple of hours with security checks both boarding and once we were on the plane - we sat at the end of the runway for over an hour. We made up some time in the flight, didn't have to circle before landing, but then had to wait for a gate, though it didn't really matter, as they didn't have anyone to unload baggage, so we sat for a couple of hours in baggage reclaim, then they announced there was a technical problem with out plane in particular so it was a while longer. We'd paid in advance for a taxi home, we weren't paying for it ourselves, but even if we had, it would have been money well spent as they were comitted to it, regardless of delays and the driver had waited all day.
