OT Some nice news of Katrina

In the midst of the sorrow and anguish that Katrina has brought, I want to introduce a bright note. This is a true story, which happened to friends.

A Biloxi Couple evacuated with two dogs and one cat, to the home of DD and SIL in Central Florida. The older dog has some health issue requiring special medicine, which is a controlled substance. They ran out of the medicine and called a Veterinary Clinic to get the new prescription. Because it is controlled, law states that the Vet must physically examine the animal before writing the Rx. So, the family went there. They got two refills for the Rx. The Veterinarian did NOT charge for the office visit. She said "It's the least I can do for you."

Thank heavens for little acts of kindness. PAT in VA/USA

Thanks for telling us this, Pat. I feel so sorry for the people affected by this tragedy, but I can't help feeling awful for the pets so many were forced to leave behind.

This is wonderful news Pat!

We now seem to have inherited another dog today as well! He has tags on, Louisiana tags and I have tried calling the phone number but it just rings and rings and rings.

The local Houston paper here has set up a website for people to try to find their loved ones and to get messages to one another - I'm going to post the dogs info there and hope someone claims him.

As we have driven through our neighborhood today, there are vehicles parked everywhere along the sides of our streets with Louisiana license plates - so surely his owner is in the neighborhood somewhere and he just wandered away and didn't know how to get back.

Ahhh poor pup! Maybe you could print up fliers and put on the windshields of the cars parked in the neighborhood. Bless you for your enthusiasm to help with the displaced people in your town.

My wonderful, computer savvy husband is out doing that now!

He's so terrific!

And so are all of you wonderful people!

There are a number of agencies providing help to the animals affected by the floods, either through rescue or fostering. You can find them listed here, as well as a number of other charities that are helping there:

I made donations to the Humane Society as well as a "people" charity. My heart lies with both.

I had to stop watching the coverage when I saw some people lifted from their roof and they had to leave their small dog behind.

I understand the reality, but it really made me sick and I just can't watch any more.
