OT That Bird

You know, that bird that starts singing at the top of it's lungs at four in the morning.

DH and I got into a mildly amusing discussion about it's gender. I hold that it must be male. No sane female is up at that hour unless a kid is squalling, in which case if they are singing it is quietly and soothingly. Plus males are much more likely to still be up at that hour after a night of overindulgence, and that is when they are most likely to start singing songs that they would not even attempt to hum at any other hour of the day or night. Besides, male birds have a reputation for being annoying in the morning. Witness roosters, and if a peacock is going to make a sound at all, I garaun-freaking-tee it will be at four in the morning! Unless it manages to sneak up on you.

DH of course disagrees, and holds that That Bird must be female. Beginning with the supposition that "sane female" is an oxymoron.

What do you think?

NightMist a query for the ages, which sound is more annoying? a peacock going through a paper shredder, or a peacock not going through a paper shredder?

It is probably a male mockingbird. They sing at all hours of the day and night. They are attempting to find/impress a mate. I love walking about 5AM as it starts to get light, and there are a lot of the mockingbirds out singing. They have one heck of a repetoire. And they mimic things like car alarms, cell phone rings, too! Then I get to the park to interact with the mated hoot owls before they go to bed. And listen for the red tailed hawks start their day. Throw in crows, starlings and others, gosh it is Audubon heaven!

We have a baby mockingbird just learning to sing and he prefers the stage of the gardenia bush just outside our bedroom window. He warms up to "Judy, Judy, Judy" and then attempts a special arrangement of "Chain Saw Concerto in A Minor". It's quite a show. Polly

That is my first thought. We have more than a few mockingbird stories from here. Last month a guy was working on a neighbor house. The guy whistled all morning. The mocking bird was all befuddled. Did he think the whistler was cutting into his territory? Funny. While having coffee on the patio yesterday there was a mockingbird prancing around doing a silly little dance. I wasn't impressed, hopefully his intended was. Sane female might be an oxymoron. I saw 3 of my 4 sisters Sunday. Little sanity in that group. ; ) Taria

Male. No justification for that judgment needed. We don't have mockingbirds here, to my everlasting sorrow. I remember my Daddy battling on stubborn mocker in the middle of the night one summer. Heh, the bird won but we lost a few balls, frisbees and even a shoe or two. We do have robins, and the males start their engines at 4 a.m. every morning. The females are too busy keeping eggs warm and then feeding babies to sing much. They do, however, hiss in a worried sort of way if you happen to get too close. And the House finches sing early. And the occasional starling that is a bit confused. The rest wait until 4:30 a.m. when the whole lot of them burst into the Hallelujah Chorus.
