OT: They wiped us out

Our Hannaford supermarket had the same thing happen to them not too long ago. We immediately called our bank and got new credit card numbers. We keep a very low-limit card that we use for any online purchases... the bank keeps asking us if we want a larger limit and we keep saying NO! The world we live in is getting scarier by the day! OH, Sunny! How aweful. I had a similar situation a few years ago, but with a purchase on my debit card. A whole bunch of people were affected at three different stores.

Sunny, I'm so relieved for you. I've had minor issues with this sort of thing, a Juno account (not mine) charged to my credit card that flew under the radar for awhile because I wasn't watching the purchases on my card closely enough.

Hi All,

This thread has prompted me to come out of hiding.

I hope your DS did not give any info about his account to the caller. I probably saved myself the heart ache that Sunny is suffering by following that often heard advice to not give personal info to strangers who are calling me on the telephone.

About a year ago I received a call from a man (with an accent) who stated he was from my bank. He told me that there had been three attempts to make large purchases with my bank card but before he could give me any more info he had to verify that I was the owner of the card. He then proceeded to ask me my address and all other kinds of info to verify I was the owner of the card. I did not give him the info he requested.

I told that gentleman that he had reached me so that should have verified me and that if he was legitimate the rest of what he wanted to know should be in front of him. I told him that I was not going to give him any info about my account so that he could rob me and I then hung up.

I tried to call the bank but could not get through so I went to the Bank and told them the story. They checked my account, found that there had not been any failed attempts to use that account and that there had not been any transaction other than my own. They would not verify or deny the caller but did state that the account had been compromised. They immediately closed the account and opened another.

I think for our own personal and financial safety it is good to be a little paranoid.

I am a wannabe quilter and so, a lurker here. I enjoy your posts very much. Thank you all for so many laughs.

I will now go back into lurking mode.

Actually there is. A few years ago we got a call from one of our credit cards questioning purchases from CA, TX ,OH all about the same time and same date. I'd been to a national quilt show that had vendors from all over, thus getting charge slips from different states on the same day. Once the guy looked at the slips he chuckled, and said "I guess you like fabric". We were glad they checked. Then there was the fool recently that put a hold on one of our cards without telling us, because in her words:"We see you live in OH and stayed in a motel in MI, but don't see any airline charges". Now the fool didn't use the state names-just O H, and M I and had no idea what they meant. She said every time we go out of state we should let them know!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Not likely, since we go to MI a lot. We canceled that card. Gen

I had just finished going through a stack of mail tearing off labels to go into the shred pile and then read your posting. A market in my area was hit by someone that made it so they could steal people's money from their accounts.

Hi Sunny,

I'm so sorry this happened!

You might want to consider not replacing the bank card and rely on a credit card. With a credit card there is a buffer between a thief and your money. We had someone get hold of our credit card number--have no way of knowing how as it was never out of our possession. The thief made a few small purchases online, and somehow the credit card company caught it the next day (yet another mystery, but I give them kudos!). They called us, then stopped payment on the purchases, and gave us a new card. We were never financially affected.

Hope it gets straightened out ASAP!

I had this happen recently - just small amounts but a lot of them, and all for car related items - advertising in magazines, etc. over just a few days

The bank didn't catch it - no reason why they should - and I didn't know about it until I got my monthly bill.

I telephoned the bank's call centre immediately, got put onto the Fraud Dept., new card and number the next day and full refund immediately.

It is my own personal credit card so only used for 'treats' for me and DH's birthday gift. It had only been used once since having the valid from/too updated, and that was a mail order quilt shop and I had paid with PayPal.

PayPal has now been cancelled as has the fq 'selection' I got from the quilt shop every couple of months.

Nice new Credit Card is sitting in my desk drawer waiting until the storm has well and truly passed!

We only had one other glitch. On the card we use for everyday purchases like groceries one large amount suddenly appeared for a store a long way away in a town we had never visited. Again an instant refund and the thought that this was a mis-keying of the number. I wonder if there is someone, somewhere saying 'We never got charged for the washing machine' or whether they did trace the real purchaser!

If I use my Bank Card I have to be really, really certain about the place I use it. I like my cash in smaller denominations than comes 'out of the wall' (to avoid being short changed or handing over large note for a small purchase and inconveniencing the small shops I use) so go into the bank and see a real person instead so get the type of money I need!
