OT/Things we take for granted

I know this is really off topic and I know everyone has been touched insome small way (if not a big way) by Hurricane Katrina - but I justwanted to take a few minutes to share an observation and hopefully,share a thought/feeling with youI'm sick, I'm tired and I'm still trying to maintain my dailyrequirements and help with our local families - so, I stepped out on myfront porch to sit and take a break for a few minutes..... and Inoticed......I was almost dive bombed by two hummingbirds, racing to the feeder(they just showed up here on Thursday).I was treated to the most beautiful show of a butterfly, HUGE, blackwith blue sections and little yellow dots all along the edges of hiswings - having a field day all over my pentas which are in full andamazing bloom despite suffering heat stroke for the past 5 weeks.There is a gentle breeze today and the normally hot, humid Gulf Coastwhere we live, actually has a humidity level of 55% currently.There is a nest of Cedar Wax Wings living in the tree on the side of myhouse. They don't usually nest here, so it's a rare treat. They havebeen annoying me the past few days with their incessant shrillcheeping. God, they are beautiful birds.If I didn't even count the house I live in, the food I took out of thewell working freezer to cook for dinner tonight, the air conditioningthat is relieving the heat outside, the choice of shoes I have alreadybeen through today, same with the pajamas, house dress after hotshowering and now shorts and t-shirt that I am wearing....I'd have to say that I am so overwhelmingly blessed and have so much tobe thankful for.I would be lost if I lost my home, my A/C, my clothes, my shoes, myfreezer full of meat/food, my hot and cold running, healthy water.....but I would miss just as much - my front porch. My flower beds,disheveled and wild as they are, my flowers, the trees in my yard thatare full of big bushy limbs for squirrels and birds to nest in and therope my son climbs on to get to the tree...

There will be a lot of kids with post traumatic stress problems, like this kid and her family. People like your son are a biiiig help to them. Hug him for me!

Isn't it nice to know that, even when we think we are horrible parents, we have obviously done something right? To raise loving, caring individuals takes time, and even if that isn't our conscious idea, we seem to make an impression - DS gave me his tigger and pooh to pack up for shipping - he has had them since he was about 2 years old (they are the "my first Pooh" and "my first Tigger". DS also told me to go through the clothes Essie (my Mother) broguth him and give away anything I wanted....he said he didn't need them, that he has enough, and that at least he has his family, cats, and a place to live that isn't leaky and wet.....

It IS reassuring isn't it Larisa? LOL There are so many times that I feel so inadequate as a parent. Especially all the garbage my ex and I put our kids through over the last six years, not to mention before that. And then the garbage my ex is still putting them through......

In many ways, I am reminded, "adversity makes you stronger"..... I guess my kids have had some firsthand lessons. I'm not happy for that, but I am happy for the times that I am shown/reminded, that they are better humans for it at times.
