OT: Weight Watchers

What do you guys think? Anybody successful at taking and keeping weight off with WW? Anybody got gripes or cautions?

I lost almost 50 pounds two years ago. Now I've put back on 20 in the past few months. Just lack of activity and eating too much. But I can't seem to get back under control with my eating. Too much fatigue that I'm fighting (I'm taking antibiotics again right now because dr. just realized that my constant horrible fatigue of the moment is a previously undetected lung infection. grrrrrr) while taking steroids and other nasties that put weight on the human body.

Now, I feel so horrible. Can't fit into any clothes. Can't stand to be seen in public like this. And I know I don't have the willpower to do what I did two years ago. I ate nothing but green salads for two meals a day. It appears to b e the only way I lose weight. If I ate more than 1000 calories a day, weight goes back up.

BTW -- I hate green veggies. One of the meds I take gives everything a bitter edge to the taste and green veggies seem to have it the most. They taste bad, don't satisfy hunger and set off my reflux really bad.

So I'm thinking maybe Weight Watchers. What do you think? Will I be ab le to do this? Is it a waste of money (waist of money???)??

Sunny, if you can figure out how to recall it, there's quite a diet discussion here - Gen started it, titled 'diet' and began 5/27. I wonder if there's a 'just as good as' prescription you could take that doesn't give green vegetables a bitter edge. Why don't you ask your pharmacist? We've found our drugstore folks to be very knowledgeable and delighted to help. Polly

I am returning to WW this summer. It is easier for me to stick on a diet in the summer because I can spend time preparing food. I did WW at work and continued over the summer three years ago and took off 32 lbs. I kept it off until this school year when it began creeping back up - mostly due to comfort eating - it's been a really tough year. I found the best with WW is to pre-purchase a 10 week plan because it forces you to go back. If you don't like to meeting leader, find a new one because the leader and people in your group can make all the difference.

I am not a veggie lover, but I discovered some things I can make that satisfy me. For instance, at lunch, I would make a high grain, fat free wrap (1 pt) and spread it will low fat laughing cow herb cheese (1 pt), add one slice of low fat, low salt turkey (1 pt) or precooked chicken strips and tons of fancy salad lettuce with a few drops of FF honey mustard dressing (0 points). If I wanted it more like a restaurant sandwich, I added a sprinking of bacos (1 pt).

I also flavored a lot of the steamed veggies with a low sodium hoisin sauce for a nice flavor.

First you say that the added weight is just due to lack of activity and eating too much. Then you say that you're not exercising because of fatigue from infection and antibiotics. You're also taking steroids which are known to put on weight. Contradictions big time!

If the weight were only due to diminished will power, I'd suggest that the motivational help Weight Watchers gives at meetings might be what you need to get exercising and eating right again.

But it's not.

The added weight is due to a medical condition. It might be bad for you to exercise at this time. It might be bad for you to take in reduced calories at this time. This is one for your doctor. It's also one for a good fashion consultant. Get some good quality clothes in your size. I don't care how big you are, you'll feel better wearing clothes that fit and flatter. If you end up losing weight, get other clothes that fit and flatter your new size. It doesn't have to be a full wardrobe, just a few good pieces.

Good luck and feel better soon.

from one fat butt to another - if you have a buddy that can stick with it with you, any diet will work.

I took off about 23 pounds with Weight Watchers since last August and have been holding steady for about 3 months. It does work, but you do have to keep working the program. I know, because I've done it twice before. This time, though, I have a bit more incentive to keep it up because my blood pressure has been up. I've still on some medication, but I'm sure the weight loss helps. This morning I had a 1/2 hour consultation with the dietitian at the local Y -- not something I would ordinarily do, but I won it, so I took it. She told me that Weight Watchers is the only weight loss program that the American Dietitians Association approves of. She also told me that it looked like I was doing the right thing, so keep it up. However, she also said that you have to do what works for you. With your medical conditions, it is probably a good idea to check with your doctor about weight loss. If your doctor gives you the go ahead and you think the group meetings would help, I'd recommend Weight Watchers. It won't be a quick fix, but it does give you some structure and support. Find a meeting time and place that is convenient for you and go for it.

Meanwhile, check out a good consignment shop for some nice clothes that fit well at a reasonable price. You'll feel better about yourself if you look good.

On April 12, 1976 I joined weight watchers after having been in a body brace for nearly a year I put on 80 pounds and my doctor said "take it off or I will NO LONGER be your doctor" and left the office. I called a friend and she took me to her class of WWs. By August 9th of 1976 I had taken off all the 80 pounds and attended my daughter's wedding looking neat and trim. WW held nuitrition classes and licenced me to teach WWs. I had four to five classes for 400 to 500 people every week intil the middle of 1979 when I resigned when my son needed me to take care of his family as his wife had been in a plane mishap and couldn't see to their children's needs.

Hope you'll feel it's worth your while and they have ways to doctor up veggies so you'll think you're eating pie and ice cream every meal.

Good Eating!
