OT - yet another Mac question

What about all the hard drive maintenance that has become such a normal part of my computer routine. Running Window Washer to get rid of cookies, running disk clean-up to remove unwanted partial files, etc. Running disk defragmenter to reunite fragmented files. Do you have to do any of that with a Mac?

You'll still get cookies with a Mac, since those are set up by various web sites, etc., rather than the OS. I haven't run a disk defragmenter in years -- since Mac OS 8, I believe. I do periodically run Disk Utility to repair permissions, but that's part of my backup routine and is done automatically. Normally, uninstalling unwanted apps is a simple matter of dragging them to the trash and emptying it; rarely, I have to do a search for stray files that belong to one of the deleted apps and trash them separately. I spend very little time on maintenance, all in all, other than the weekly backup I've automated.

What Sandy said.

The Mac OS also runs some disk defrag and cleanup utilities on its own at night (so you should leave your computer on at night in sleep mode once in a while). I run the repair permissions about three times a year and get rid of cookies about as often. Back up is automatic if you use Time Machine (one of the best back up programs I've seen in 30 years of having personal computers), which is included with the OS.
