There's a beautiful little crib quilt all basted and ready to stipple here. What thread to use? Nothing. Nothing is going to play well with the others. The quilt is the Tesselating Cats pattern that begins with all their tails curled in the center block in the Monkey Wrench pattern. Some mindless person (?) put a white backing on the quilt with a tiny rosebud print. Quite charming - but anything I use on the top is not going to look nice on the backing. The newest invisible thread might do okay but I have worked myself into a corner that could so easily have been avoided. Lesson learned: when you're choosing a backing for quilt, keep in mind what color thread you would like to use on the top. Red would be great on the cats blocks but is going to be overpowering on the little rosebud back. Grrrrrrr. Plan Ahead. Polly

Oh Polly, what a shame. I will have to remember your lesson.

it's probably just me but what's wrong with using 2 different thread colours? I do it all the time - one for the back and one to match the front.

Take all those that you think MIGHT work...put them in a bowl, close your eyes, mix them around a bit and pull one out.that is the one that you use :) Baby won't mind when it fells all the love you have put into it....

Merry Christmas, my dear lil bit 'specting gal

Oh Dear.... I'm with Jessamy. Why not use two different color threads? The baby won't mind in the least - really.

If I had mailed the box of backings to you that I promised, you would have had many choices. The box is packed, I just couldn't face the post office the last few weeks. There are several other boxes ready to go to the PO but instead are sitting in the guest room. My son is spending the night here tonight so I need to clear that room. (UFO's off the bed and boxes at least stacked in the corner) Why don't I just ship these boxes and get them out of the way? Four quilts stacked on the bed only need binding. We went to the 8 AM service this morning so I now have two hours to clear that room and finish the last Christmas present before Matt arrives. Tom is cooking our family dinner so I will have the afternoon off. I like it when these kids grow up and take responsibility.

Merry Christmas, Susan Price

Polly, how about a nice variegated thread that will look good on the top and just add interest to the back? The pastel thread available looks beautiful and delicate when quilted on a baby quilt and blends with most anything.....

Just a suggestion.....

Polly, that sounds like one adorable little quilt that some little person is just going to adore, whether or not the back thread matches perfectly. =20

Invisible thread in the bobbin and whatever you like on top??? Please no flames about babies' toes. The newer invisible threads are soft and break easily- they are no more threat than colored thread.

I beg to differ! You create masterpieces, no doubt Polly! As far as I'm concerned, anything created with love is a masterpiece. Keep well!

I do also, however the only problem you come across is when you have white fabric on top. Sometimes the bobbin thread, although tension is correct, ends up showing on top. It boils down to a matter of preference.

You are so right, Carole. Babies don't concern themselves with the color of the quilting thread. It was my great joy this year to watch a 7 week-old baby learning to focus beautiful big eyes on one of my crib quilts. He was so alert and fascinated until more important matters turned his attention. Polly

I've never been able to perfectly adjust the top / bottom tensions so that there's not a tiny little dot of the 'other' color showing on each side. Probably a 'screw loose' at my controls. Polly

No, Susan, we can't blame this on you. I could have chosen the teddy bears on red gingham for the backing and that would have worked quite well. It just didn't cross my mind that it mattered - until I got to the 'now what?' next step. Polly

It's time to do some thread buying and I'm going to add some variegateds to the supply. We have flash flood warnings out now not to mention the last-minute shoppers. Santa is going to have to leave my new pony inside. DH is going to just love that. Polly

Mmmmm, yes, Irene, it IS adorable. This is one pattern I'm going to enjoy doing again - but next time I'll remember to carefully choose the backing. Some of us just have to learn the hard way. Polly

What is the best needle for the invisible? My practice test didn't go very well and it could be that I need a needle different from the standard green band I usually use. Polly
