Push me Pull you

With apology to Dr. Doolittle. When machine quilting, have you ever thought about whether it is easier to push the quilt or pull it? We discussed recently the benefits of starting in the middle of a quilt or elsewhere; don't think we reached any conclusions. Last night I realized that I am much more at ease pulling the quilt. I mean I put the whole bulk of it out past the SM and slowly pull it towards me as I stitch. Seems much easier than beginning with the quilt in my lap and shoving it away. I can't say whether pulling the quilt improved the visibility or my stitching. It certainly was easier on my back, neck, shoulders and assorted other body parts. Which way do you go? Polly

I'm a 'pull you', too. I think it makes a huge difference if you can see where you 'going'.

So, 'pull' forever!! . In message , Polly Esther writes

It's certainly easier on my neck when I pull the quilt toward me, but then I can't see as well as I can when I push it. I end up doing a little of both: pushing when visibility is absolutely vital, pulling when things are a bit less fussy.

I did. Sorry Polly et al. I had the picture in my mind's eye (clearly not a good spatial concept day!!) What I 'saw' was that the stitching is proceeding towards me - and I can see the area to be quilted. I spoke as if I were doing the opposite. . In message , Polly Esther writes

Well, Pat, I didn't quite follow you either. Pulling does obscure some of the quilt - at least the part that is on the other side of the needle / foot / etc. For this quilt, I'm just meandering around so it's not a big deal; probably wouldn't be the best way if you were attempting swirly peacock feathers and such. The quilt at hand is the one I call 'Madness' and no special effect is required in the quilting. Polly

It all depends on where I'm quilting. In my little sewing "studio" I only have a small space behind the sewing machine. So then I definitely "push" trying to keep as much as possible in my lap while I work. But if I get one of my big handsome sons to carry the machine up to the table where I can spread out, then I'm a "pull" -- mostly. I guess I sort of squish and moosh and do whatever I can to get the greatest visibility.

I am finally at the squish and moosh stage. Have to quilt just a little bit and take a break. Boy it's tough pushing or pulling but I do see that one day this will end. I love this Madness quilt. Pictures? You bet your boots. I'm going to bore you to pieces with pictures. Polly

Hmmm. Don't really know. I think probably a little of both depending on where in the quilt I am. Mostly I try to keep as much of it out of my lap and on the table as I can.
