quarter square triangles

Thanks, Pati! Between you and Kathy, I think I know what the reasoning is now. :)

uhuh, if you did 3/4" for HSTs the result would be too small, true, you round up from the exact answer to get to 7/8, but it's literally a thread too big, if I have to trim a HST that was cut as finished size

  • 7/8, it's because I shrank the seam allowance at one end, not because the measurement of 7/8 is too big. The maths for QSTs works out at about 2 or 3 threads under 1 1/4 being exact, in accurate cutting or sewing is much more of a problem than the tiny amount it is of absolutely exact, the bigger numbers would work, but you definitely have to trim, if you want to trim, then great, but with accurate cutting and sewing, 1 1/4 is the most accurate answer even if we were to starting cutting to the nearest 1/16th.

Started out good, but went a little wrong...

extra 3/8 for each diagonal, HST 1/2 + 3/8 =3D 7/8 QST 1/2 + 3/8 + 3/8 =3D 1 1/4 - right answer, wrong sum to get there :-)

4 1/2 inches as in will be 4 inches once you've sewn them into whatever they are going into? in which case 5 1/4 if you don't trim to size at each step, bigger if you do. If you meant 4 1/2 inch finished, then 5 3/4.
