Question for the group

Question one:

Without googling, if you've never seen Soamoan quilts, what do you envision in the way of patterns, colors and motiffs for baby quilts?

Second question:

If you are familiar with Soamoan quilts, what are some of your favorite links?

did you mean to type Samoan? as in from Samoa in the South Pacific? the are called Tivaivai (sp?). they are similar to the Hawaiian designs. most often done in two colours, a bright colours on light or dark background. the bright all cut in one big piece and applique'd onto the background, just like they do in Hawaii. as for baby quilts, hmmmmm, not sure there is any difference to one of those vs one for adults. however i'm not Samoan nor have i ever been there. there is a rather large community of Samoans here in New Zealand. thats how i know what little i do know, fwiw. exhausted in the south pacific but not too hot nor too hard a day to throw flowers around, thank goodness. jeanne

I have not seen any quilts that are specifically Samoan but I have seen ones made by the Fijian people -- we spent our 25th anniversary in Fiji. Their designs were similar to those made by the Hawaiian women with appliqué designs of fruits and flowers but also fish. The Pacific Island cultures, while different and unique do have a lot of similarities so I think you would be OK using something similar to what you see in Hawaii. CiaoMeow >^;;^<

I'm sorry, yes, I sure did mean to have it come out typed like that! (I have to quit typing when I'm tired unless I run thing through a spell checker.)

Thanks!

Okay you made me go look and they are truly gorgeous. I especially like the one with just two tones. Drifting further about fabrics... Did anyone happen to catch the Travel channel when they visited a tribe in Africa reknowned for their cloth weaving skills? The fabric was drop dead gorgeous, woven in beautiful bright un-muddied colors. Only the men are allowed to do the actual weaving and their looms are all operated with the feet. I think it may have been called Kente cloth. What I wouldn't do to get some of my hands on that for quilting!

Maybe you could ask Tutu if she is familiar with that particular cloth.

I don't know anything about them, but I'd guess something like Tahitian quilts...wholecloth applique.
