quick intro

I've been quilting for a little while, but never thought to look and see if there was a newsgroup, so I'm pleasantly surprised to find one that looks very active and fairly free from spam!

I'm currently working on a Thomas the Tank Engine quilt for my son, it's an interesting one as it was has no need for binding, the pattern directs you to make a sandwich of batting, then back with right side up and front with right side down and stitch most of the way round and turn inside out, I choose to use fleece instead, so only 2 layers. I'm nervous about having excess or insufficient fleece, though I was careful pinning it before stitching, having started quilting, it looks like I may have some excess, but not too much, that the slack can't be taken up, but next time, I think I'll go back to binding and quilt from the centre out!

I look forward to chatting with you.

Hi Anne, Welcome. I've seen the Thomas the Tank Engine fabric and wished ever so hard that it had been available when my son was young. He lived for Thomas and the rest of the Shining Time Station characters. Where in Washington State are you? I also live in WA, east of the Cascades in a small city on the Columbia.

Hi Anne! Fancy seeing you here! I started quilting when Pillbug was 6mo. I didn't know you quilted!

Welcome Anne! You've described the birthing method of backing a quilt. IMO it works better for tied comforters. But children are less interested in the technical side -your son will love it! Roberta in D

trying to work out when I actually started, I think it may have been after Ada was born, but it surprises me it was that recent, I'd taken a bit of a break due to the move and have only recently reunearthed my sewing machine, of course I then had to buy a voltage transformer as it's a British one, I thought it was a brand that isn't available over here, but I think I may be wrong, I've just only seen other brands in the shops, it's pretty generic though, I've not had a problem buying feet or needles for it

The one book I've seen it in call it "bagging", but I think it's one I'll avoid in future!

Patti, I see you're email address is from the UK, are you still based there? how do you find getting hold of supplies, everything seemed very expensive to me, a lot of prices seem to be the same in pounds as they are in dollars, or worse. If we move back to the UK, I guess I'll be buying up a lot of supplies!

I'm glad it's the best! I much prefer newsgroups to email lists, but in a lot of topics newsgroups have really slowed down from spam and trolling. I'm planning to make a scrap quilt next, though I'll definitely have to buy some new fabrics unless I can find some people to do swaps with, it will also be my first time foundation piecing.

My favourite chocolate is something minty, in the UK I like Cadbury's Dairy Milk with mint crispy bits, here I quite like Junior Mints.

Yes, I'm firmly resident here, Anne! It sometimes takes a little while to get something which has just been introduced in the US; but we do get it in the end. I think some of the larger shops here must send someone to the big shows to see what is new and then they start stocking it. I do get everything I need over here. I don't order from the US - got to keep our shops going! - though I do get gifts from lovely US friends, from time to time. I suppose prices are pretty well pounds for dollars, especially books; though the UK is better than continental Europe. Our shops are fewer and further between than in the US, but most have pretty efficient mail order service which I use most of the time. I don't shop at shows any more - unless I'm in dire need - as I can usually only spare a day and need that for looking at the quilts! There are two or three quilting magazines, which all seem to do quite well - they are quite different from one another; but we don't have any TV quilt shows. A few years ago, I tried a letter-writing campaign to every likely channel, but got nowhere. There are far more shows now than when I started; and they are well patronised. The largest is now at the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham (August). This was introduced about five years ago.

Sorry - probably far more than you wanted to know! . In message , Anne Rogers writes

Welcome, Anne!! Quilting with fleece can be a bit of a challenge as it stretches when quilted. One thing that helps when I decide to do that is to decrease the pressure on my foot a little. YMMV

Where in WA? Me too.

I'm a bit further north, Crossroads area, I don't belong to anything at the moment, I'm planning to attend a quilting group at my church. I don't think I can do Friday, I have a physical therapy appointment at 10, I also have small children, which makes weekday daytimes tricky. Does the guild have a website/email list?
