My DS (aged 20 months) was rummaging around in the bag of books we had just brought back from the library. I assumed he was looking for the Thomas the Tank Engine books he borrowed (he has his own ticket and has done for well over a year). But next time I looked, he was sat in the centre of the settee with a large hardback quilting book open on his lap.
I smiled at him, and he smiled back. He was flicking through the pages. Some he just flicked past - obviously nothing on that page that caught his eye. Sometimes he would point at something and say "look" (actually, he says "wuck", but I know what he means), or "wow".
So I thought - he just likes the bright colours and regular patterns. That's the kind of thing babies like looking at, isn't it? But then he pointed at a page and said - clear as anything - "Quilt". He says it clearer than his 3 1/2 year-old sister, who still says "twilt". DS is flicking through the pages of a quilting book, pointing at pictures and saying "quilt", "quilt", "wuck, quilt". My son.
