Quilt Auction Report

Several months ago I reported that 40 antique quilts had been donated to a local charity and I had agreed to help them organize an auction. The auction was held last week end and I am happy to report that we raised over $10,000. This wasn't all from the quilts as we also had raffle prizes and a pre-priced boutique.

To help draw the crowd I gave my History of Quilting lecture, illustrated with twenty quilts which hung in the entry area of the church. I also used quilts to decorated the walkway from the elevator/stairway to the room where the quilts were hung for the silent auction.

Several of the damaged quilts were purchased by women who plan to have them repaired and donate them to the Heifer Project International Quilt Auction this fall. This really thrilled me. As I showed a few quilts at local guilds, etc to advertise our auction I mentioned how easy some would be to repair and what the appraiser said about tripling the value if they were repaired. I had done some small repair and cleaning but didn't have time to do the major repair necessary on a few quilts.

All but two of the quilts found good homes. Two quilts were not purchased but one was ugly and the other had several grease spots. I had followed the suggestions of the appraiser to remover the grease but it didn't come out. Yes, an antique quilt can be ugly.

A special thank you to those from this newsgroup who sent me items for the pre-priced boutique.

Some attending the sale asked if this would be an annual event. We laughed as it is unlikely that anyone would donate 40 quilts again but one never knows. The charity is thinking of holding an art auction next year. Maybe I will finally make an art quilt to donate.
