Quilt show award question..........

That's it! Sponge cake! I could hear Helen Mirren's "accent", but I couldn't quite hear the word! I love that movie...the characters, the scenery....the whole thing!

R/Sandy -- in a guild that does not recognize the difference between machine quilting and hand quilting, but specifically denotes huge difference in machine quilting techniques (hand guided, computer guided) - I do not agree w/ this policy

Sandy,

Do you free motion quilt your quilts? If so, hand guided? Do you teach free motion quilting?

I agree with your comment and am interested in your reasoning.

I had wondered how those Honourable Mentions worked.

Also, as a beginning quilter myself, I was really looking forward to seeing entries in category 5 (adult beginner), but I didn't notice that ribbon on any entry. Was it there?

Howdy!

huh? who? where? hand quided: of course! I hand quilt. (Professionally, too.) All hand quided. ;-)

My reasoning? Me? Reason? While I agree that hand-guided machine quilting is more painstaking (and a whole lot of other DIY stuff) than computer-guided machine quilting, it's still ...well: duh! machine quilting! And quite different from the technique of hand quilting. [I didn't say "better" or "traditional"--does not apply.] Most of the bigger shows I've been to have separate categories for hand & machine quilting; guess the local guild doesn't think that "big".

R/Sandy -- all the quilts I quilt have my name on them...somewhere

Now that you mention it I don't remember them handing out that award. I remember them asking me when they called to say I had been accepted if it was my first entry into a juried show or if I was a beginner, I would have like to have said yes but I had to be honest! I would have liked to see a winner in that category too. They did have a winner for the Founders award though (first entry into a juried show) although at the moment I can't remember which one it was.

Did you go to the show in Waterloo? If you did, how did you like it?

So you had an entry in the juried show? Wow. Which one was it? They were all amazing. I wonder when/how they will announce the Viewers' Choice? I foolishly didn't record the artists' names for some of the quilts I sketched and photographed, and I only have a printed catalogue for the juried show, nothing for the Manitoba section where several quilts blew me away.

Boy has Waterloo grown since I was a student there in the 80s. I went to the Grand National show in the art gallery in Kitchener, the preview of auction quilts in the Kitchener City Hall, and RIM Park.

I liked it. I'm not really qualified to compare shows, since the only previous shows I've attended were before I took up quilting myself in January of this year. Let me see, before that I went to a couple of the Kingston shows, the CQA/Ottawa Guild show last year in Ottawa, and a showing of The Quilt in Stratford. I didn't think this show had quite the value for money of the above-mentioned shows, but I thought the various events at RIM Park were attractively laid out, with enough space between quilts that I could step back and see things from a distance.

The friend whose example got me into quilting is now greatly amused at watching me start to build a stash. I looked at the fabrics I had bought earlier this month while on vacation, and I told her on the way to Waterloo that I was determined not to buy any more purples this time.

So there I was at the booths for Len's Mill Store, Sew-Sisters, Kitchener Textiles, etc, and she would say to me "You know, there is a lot of purple in that pattern. I'm just mentioning it ..."

There are so many quilt shows that show hand quilting against machine quilting. I, imho, please don't shoot me, think that is just wrong. Two different animals, kinda like showing dogs against cats. That is my reasoning, just wanted to know someone elses reasoning.

There are also "judged" quilt shows that don't have any accredited judges judging them. And also, this show shows the name of the quilters while it is being judged. Also, something I think should not be allowed.

I do really enjoy the quilt shows that are not judged. Sometimes they call them quilt displayes. I think it gives newbies a great place to start without the pressure of being judged.

There is a town south of my that just had a wonderful show in a local playhouse. The quilts were draped over ladders, and hung in many different manners and it was wonderful. It looked so informal and the women hosting the show were so fun and friendly. Such a fun show to see.
