Quiltmaker Magazine

I had already decided not to renew my subscription to Quiltmaker - sure glad I didn't renew it after hearing this. Donna in SW Idaho

This issue has now been resolved by the new owners of the magazine. Re- read Ann's blog. Don't go canceling subscriptions....the new owners really aren't the ones at fault.

Quilter's Newsletter was very nasty to me in the 1990's over a subscription issue (long story) and I have never had anything to do with them since. Quilter's Newsletter has always been part of the same "stable" of magazines.

If Keepsake Quilting is also owned by this company, I'll be sure to throw away their catalogues! They are overpriced anyway, IMO.

------------------------------------------------- Here's what Ann has to say about the issue. Though I'm sure she doesn't yet have a check in hand this quickly.

------------------------------------------------ An Update Thank you all for your support in the issue I=92ve had over nonpayment for the use of my quilt and design!

I=92ve been in contact with with the group Publisher and we have reached a resolution that=92s to the satisfaction of all. My problem really was with the way CK Media mishandled their affairs. The new owner New Track Media, found quite a mess when they took over and are working very hard to turn things around.

Going forward the new owner wants to publish magazines that promote and celebrate the art of quilting. (other arts too, but we were talking about quilting). I=92m excited for the future of the magazines I have grown to love.

I appreciate so many people standing up for a fellow quilter..but some may be taking the fight a little too far? I hope we can all put the history of the magazines and their former poor management behind us and go forward with the new owners vision for a new and improved atmosphere where their subscribers, contributors, and customers are greatly appreciated?

I=92m looking forward to seeing some of the great things that New Track, it=92s Editors, and Publisher have planned! Once again..we can look forward to great magazines arriving at our doors.

Please..spread the word?

Thanks!

I just read all of this for the first time and it doesn't sound to me like she has had it resolved at all.

Thanks for the update KJ. I hadn't been back to her blog since I read the original this morning, so I was glad to hear that the situation was resolved to everyone's satisfaction. It sounds like the new owners have quite a mess to work through, but it's nice to know their goal is to promote and celebrate the art of quilting. I wish them luck in doing so, and I agree with Anne that we should put the history and bad management, etc. of the past owner behind us and hope that the new ownership will follow through on their promises.

I do plan to let my Quilters Newsletter subscription expire when it's up, but not because of Ann's issue - QNM simply isn't the magazine that it used to be, and I don't find it to be all that interesting any longer. It takes me only about half an hour to go through it, and I've usually found nothing worth going back to or hanging on to for future use. I feel bad doing this, because it doesn't seem to be very supportive of the new owners and their goals, but I also can't see putting out the yearly subscription fee for something I don't enjoy any longer. Maybe if they make some changes to it, I'll reconsider.

Thanks for making me go back and look for an update, Kathyl! (For anyone else interested, the update is at .) It's good to know that things have been amicably worked out. :)

That is good news, KJ. And it's a nice example of a single person defending herself against the vagaries of corporate issues. Thanks for the update. I hope Ms. Champion will have cash in hand ASAP!

Bummer. I was looking forward to seeing just what rctq could do if they launched an all-out attack. Polly

But the uproar will live on in Internetdom for decades! It's sort of like starting a fire and then not being able to put it out. joan

All out attacks are a lot of work. Probably too much work for me. (although I admit I probably will always hold a grudge against Janome) I will have to sit back and see how these magazines look. Seems they are trying to put together a monpoly. I am glad there still are some others. American Patchwork and Quilting is one of my favorites. Think I'll stick with them. Taria

I made the mistake of saving a few of those wonderful catalogues. A few grew into a few more. I think there is a stack of them about a foot tall. I suppose they would be a wonderful history of fabric of our day. Their orders are never messed up. (think NOT HoP) I don't believe they are associated with the QNM people. Those folks did used to have a smaller catalogue too though. Maybe they still do? Taria

I suffered through many unfufilled promises, I got really tired of reminding them every few months that it was probably payday for me soon, and then it would take another month or so until I would finally get a small check in the mail. In January this year, it appeared that I had worked the second half of 2008 for free. Which means that my own expenses weren't being covered - let alone profit - and I was digging into my own purse to cover CK Media. I notified them in February that I would not be accepting any more projects until I was paid in full. Then I got the letter in March offering me 40%. I had no other legal recourse, so I accepted the terms, though it was another month before I received the check. Aparently I was only one among at least 700 "vendors" that needed to be paid. That hurt, as I worked for them more than 11 years and had always felt a part of the crew, not just another vendor.

Oh, and I sewed for both Quiltmaker and Quilters Newsletter, and also many of the special issues published throughout the year - it wasn't the magazines at fault, it was the people who (miss) ran the CK Media Publishing group. My problems were all with CK Media; I have no idea how the new company will behave. Ann Champion should probably wait till she has money in hand before "dropping her charges" (so to speak) but I'm glad for her that she maybe will have resolution. As for me, I will never recover the other 60%. The money I did receive didn't even cover my expenses for the period. And no doubt I will get a another 1099 in January on which I will have to pay federal, state, local, social security, & self-employment taxes.
