Re: Presoaking batting

To pre-wash or not to prewash, that is the question!

Have just got out my new Hobbs Tuscany Wool Batting to use. It says there is no shrinkage, but suggests you make lots of little samples using 'presoaked/as it comes out of the packet' samples to see what the difference is.

My instinct is to use it as it comes out of the wrapper - its nice and smooth for making the sandwich.

So is there a difference - something I should know about. I do know how to pre-wash it, but can't see the point if it doesn't shrink. Is there something I need to know!

And can I ask the same question about my unopened packet of Silk batting (same make). That says it has a 5% shrinkage. I seem to remember someone saying it looks nice when its been washed if you don't preshink and so it shrinks within the quilt.

My usual Quilters Dream Cotton Select is much simpler - straight from the packet - and is what I use for quilts to be given away, but these two wool and silk are for me to keep, so not landing someone else with higher maintenance!

I'll be interested in those answers too Sally. I bought the Tuscany wool and silk batts recently. I'm very impatient when it comes to the layering stage of the process....I've never pre-shrunk a batt. And I'm hit and miss about pre washing my fabrics.
